Q3-2026 Nearly Ready
This will be issue number 146, some 36 1/2 years after the first copy of The Quarterly Review of Food Hydrocolloids was published in 1990. IMR has an unparalleled database of quarterly hydrocolloid pricing and supporting documentation.
The third quarter is normally a "quiet time" in hydrocolloid pricing. Most deliveries are made under existing contracts. Negotiations for 2027 contracts will start in Q4 of this year.
But global trade is anything but normal. The level of uncertainty and risk is unprecedented in IMR's 36+ years of reporting on price movements. War(s), energy upheavals, transportation challenges, tariffs, customs duties, anti-dumping, forced labor restrictions, etc., all lead to a "Get it while you can" mentality for many hydrocolloids.
Contracts notwithstanding, there is an underlying upward trend in pricing for many, if not all, hydrocolloids.
Agar average pricing has increased from $7.91/lb to $8.31/lb (weighted average between gelidium and gracilaria).
Acacia seyal is up only 0.05€/kg but senegal is up 0.40€-0.45€, indicating continued uncertainty in raw material supply, especially from Sudan
The gap between Chinese vs. Western xanthan is greater in Europe than it is in the US. Chinese xanthan prices in the US are around $3.75/LB whereas they are nearly half that price in Europe at Euro 3.13/KG.
Pectin prices are likely to remain competitive with the launch of a new and very large production facility in China.
