SupplySide Global, Day 1: New Sources and Ingredient Innovation
Day 1 of SupplySide Global drew a strong crowd and had an upbeat atmosphere. Traditionally focused on the supplement industry, the show has expanded into a food-ingredient event, with peptides, multiple magnesium forms, women’s health, and GLP-1 support as major themes.
New supplier connections
We identified a new Chinese acacia manufacturer, a Thai fish- and bovine-gelatin manufacturer, and another Chinese gelatin manufacturer. We also connected with a new, vertically integrated Bangladesh capsule manufacturer that produces its own gelatin. Contact details will be included in the next Quarterly Review.
Capsules and market developments
Discussions with capsule manufacturers suggest that the U.S. market is roughly 60% HPMC capsules and 40% gelatin capsules. Antidumping duties on both gelatin and HPMC capsules from Vietnam, India, and China were also a topic of discussion. Elsewhere, we heard reports of significant upward pricing movement in locust bean gum (LBG).
Notable applications on the floor
-
Hydration gels: Jungbunzlauer featured a refreshing hydration gel made with Tayagel® that delivered a clean mouthfeel.
-
Citrus fiber for tablets: JRS showcased Vivapharm® CF, a citrus fiber designed for supplement tableting.
-
High-protein ramen: Barentz featured high-protein ramen noodles in a protein-fortified broth. The noodles contain soy protein isolate, potato starch and enzymes designed to help maintain starch integrity during boiling.
-
Jelly sachets: An emerging format in the U.S. market, these small tubes of jelly were very popular on the floor. Products featured ingredients ranging from collagen and chia seeds to vitamins and minerals, typically using combinations of agar, carrageenan, LBG and xanthan gum.
The energy on the floor was positive, with plenty of new sources and application ideas to explore. If we didn't get a meeting on the books, IMR would still be happy to connect; please reach out!
