Customer focus
Kevin Huang and the art of money
|
|
Hyperion Bank customer Kevin Huang studied architecture and city/regional planning, and has worked in construction/real estate management and HIV health policy, but it is his art – sculpture and other forms and media – that got the attention of Hyperion Branch Manager Lee Green.
Huang visited the bank one day to deposit a dividend check and Lee learned that Huang was collecting money found on street and putting it into a jar, then a lot of jars, and began writing down where he found the money on index cards. Sometimes he even included a map. Eventually, he began investing these funds in stock certificates, most often prompted by world events.
“Along the way I was realizing what the project was – paper and coins are art, they are beautiful,” he says, “and you can purchase stock certificates, also often beautiful artworks. Part of the figurative conversation started to be about growth of money, compounded interest – when the stocks were purchased, their worth, dividends…and how the more than $550 has grown quite significantly. My work is storytelling, taking an object and telling a story, establishing the culture context…and this work is telling a story of what’s happening in our culture.”
Right now, "Street Money" (working title) is a living, evolving art conversation and project, though Huang has begun assembling books of the index cards, stock certificates and other elements, with thoughts of displaying those.
In the meantime, you can see his work on display at NextFab,1800 N American St., PHL or on his website and by following him on Instagram. You may also see him around – he lives 4 blocks from the bank and has a studio about 6 blocks away – and is a frequent figure model for artists at various local community art centers.
And, like Hyperion – of which he has been a customer since 2009, Huang has Atlanta connections: His Mom lives in Covington, and his sister lives in the Oakhurst neighborhood.
“I’m always telling people they should get an account at the bank,” he says, usually referencing one of Hyperion’s interest-earning checking accounts, “you need to change banks and get this. And I like the people who work there. I go in and know the person I am talking to.”
Whether or not you follow his advice and see Huang at the bank, you will surely see his artwork somewhere soon: He sold 70 percent of the pieces in first solo show in October.

The time change is a great reminder to check the batteries and functions of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace them if necessary. While you're at it, change your furnace filter(s), though you should most likely be doing that more than twice each year.

Our friends from Eclipse Brand Builders recently visited Hyperion’s Philadelphia banking office. They brought Hyperion President Lou DeCesare a University of Georgia national championship hat. To his left is Gene Lock, Chairman, CEO & Partner, Eclipse. Our connections with Eclipse are many, as they designed our Atlanta office and several of their principals are Hyperion shareholders.
