Irini Lulu, the owner of BHS Mortgages, is one of those people who “walks the walk,” helping others as she has been helped in the past. In fact, Irini and her husband, Omri (owner of Emes Locksmith, which serves Philly + suburbs in a 35-mile radius), were recognized last month for their extensive community work with an award during the Lubavitch Center for Russian Jewry’s 22nd Anniversary Dinner.
Part of the Lubavitch Center for the past 14 years, Irini says her philosophy of life is that “you come with nothing and leave with nothing, so it’s what you do while you are here that matters.” She says her gift is that she is great with numbers, so she’s leveraged that to not only start her successful residential and commercial mortgage company, but also to give back 10 percent of profits to the community and otherwise uplift her community.
“I came to this country at 18 and many people helped me in various ways,” Irini says. “Now I ‘give back’ to people who are from developing countries and may be struggling socioeconomically. People want to pursue education and wealth and to integrate with their adopted home. The more people we can help, the more it uplifts communities, and the more society becomes humane.”
Irini became acquainted with Hyperion banker Jennifer Gardella, who she calls “an extremely hard worker.” Over the past 5-plus years, they have referred business back and forth. “I know how strong Jenn’s banking knowledge is,” Irini says. “We have candid conversations and try to help and partner with one another and with (individuals) and businesses who need a banking assist.”
In addition to helping others through the Lubavitch Center, Irini works with a number of organizations, including RENEW, an organization she helped found and for which she serves as a board member. She also volunteers at Peace Islands, among others.
“I am idealistic; I am glad I live in America – the land of opportunity for people who are working hard, doing the right thing and following their hearts,” she says. “I like knowing when I put my head on the pillow at night that I have done what I can and am helping other people do the same.”
Jennifer was on hand as Irini and Omri received their recent award. “Irini is a smart businesswoman, strong, ambitious, passionate, and empowering. Hyperion is a community bank, so it’s terrific to watch a community-minded customer and business partner receive recognition from a community organization,” Jennifer says. “This is why I do what I do, and I love it.”

Professor Crawford gets teaching award |

Once a semester, Robinson College colleagues come together to celebrate faculty excellence, among other things. Professor Emeritus Harvey Brightman – who started his career at GSU in 1975 and has extensive experience helping university faculty members improve their teaching – was on hand to help present the award.
“My time teaching has been phenomenally rewarding, as I continue to learn through every interaction with students and guest speakers,” Charlie says. “And to be recognized with an award honoring Professor Brightman is especially meaningful to this still-new, part-time instructor.”
