Customer focus: Breaking the stigma of suicide
The Reflect Organization is a relatively new Hyperion customer, though its history with the bank runs deeper. Hyperion’s Nicole Leitz (Vice President and Business Development Officer) serves on the nonprofit’s Advisory Board, and Hyperion’s Charlie Crawford (CEO and Chairman) knows Reflect’s Founder, Jared Fenton.
Fenton got the idea for Reflect when he was an undergraduate student at The University of Pennsylvania. During his first year, he would eat lunch every day with a new person who was sitting alone. It didn’t take long to realize his lunchmates were struggling more than they appeared on the surface. After the loss of a student peer to suicide, Fenton started Reflect Roundtables, an evidence-based program that brings students together to talk openly and vulnerably about their lives, college, mental health and wellness.

Today, Reflect is a nationally recognized nonprofit that empowers college students to foster a culture of authenticity, self-love and allyship. “We focus on empowering individuals and communities to support mental health and prevent suicide, with a particular focus on creating spaces where college students can have open, non-judgmental conversations about mental health,” says Cameron McConkey, COO of Reflect.
McConkey emphasizes that stigma and education are some of the biggest barriers to people recognizing a mental health crisis and seeking care for themselves and others. Talking about suicide and learning how to address mental health emergencies should be as routine as any other form of health education, he says.
So, what’s one thing we can all learn - and then re-share - to be part of the solution?
“Just like everyone knows to call 911 in a physical or medical emergency, it’s essential to know about 988 for mental health emergencies,” McConkey says. “988 is the national suicide and crisis lifeline. It’s staffed by mental health professionals. It’s free and confidential to use. And it’s available by call or text 24 hours, every day of the year. It’s truly a life-saving resource that everyone should know about from an early age.”
For businesses, he says it is important for employees, especially managers and supervisors, to receive training and support. Companies can offer trainings like Mental Health First Aid or Question, Persuade, and Refer (QPR), which Reflect is poised to provide to community-based organizations and schools. Offering access to mental health resources, such as employee assistance programs (EAPs) and high-quality employee health insurance, is also key. “The connection between mental wellness and business management is closer than you might think,” says McConkey.
“Hyperion makes our work possible, and Nicole has been a dedicated partner in our success. She is an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and readily available banker, and she anticipates many of our business and financial needs,” McConkey says. “Her strong background working with nonprofit organizations – both on the job and off-hours – is a bonus. Plus, when the time was right for us to make the switch to Hyperion, she made it as seamless as possible!”

Family legacy of Hyperion director Bobby Nix
The Robert N.C. Nix Federal Building – named for the grandfather of Hyperion Board Member Robert N.C. Nix, III – received a 2024 Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Award after recent rehabilitation work on the building. We took the opportunity to check in with “Bobby” Nix, including about his rich family history.
Robert Nix Sr., for whom the building is named, was the first African American to represent Pennsylvania in the House of Representatives, serving from 1958 to 1979. He was previously a delegate to the 1956 Democratic National Convention. In 1985 this U.S. court house and post office building in Philadelphia was renamed for Nix Sr., who passed away two years later.
Nix Senior’s son, Robert N.C. Nix Jr., became the first African American elected to statewide office. He was appointed to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court by the Governor in 1971 and elected to the position the next year. He served on that court for 24 years, including 12 years as Chief Justice; he was the first African American Chief Justice of any state’s highest court. Judge Nix passed away in 2003. In 2021 artists created a mural at 15th and Jefferson streets in Philadelphia, honoring Nix Jr. and Sr. for their contributions to racial equity & social justice.
“I was fortunate because I had my grandfather and father for a good long period of time,” Nix III says. “When your family members are in it, you learn so much about how nasty politics can be. I also had the benefit of seeing how differently my grandfather and father handled things; they argued about how to do things. They couldn’t help themselves. I often said they would have been better in reversed roles (in terms of who served in the legislative branch and in the judicial branch).”
Like his grandfather and father, Bobby Nix also is an attorney, as well as a successful entrepreneur, as Founder & President of Pleasant News, Inc., an airport concessionaire and management services operator of almost 30 years. He has deep knowledge of community banks, having assisted 2-3 other banks before joining Hyperion’s board.
“Charlie (Crawford) has put together one of the finest boards to work with…good people, each one’s skill set fits a different shoe,” Nix says, naming Hyperion board members and their specialties. “One of the things this bank has done…we recognize as diverse as possible stakeholders, from clientele, staffing, board members…to leadership and consultants, we constantly try our best to reflect diversity.”

Ryan Sullivan wears many hats for Hyperion
Team Hyperion recently celebrated Ryan Sullivan’s Sixth Anniversary with the bank. In addition to being a Vice President & Relationship Manager, Ryan works closely with Hyperion’s Business Development Officer, underwrites his own loans and – because of his naturally broad range of talents – also keeps our website updated.
Prior to joining Hyperion in 2018, Ryan worked for two other banks in the region, as well as a large financial institution and a prominent appraisal firm. He earned both a bachelor’s degree in business administration and an MBA in Finance from LaSalle University.
Ryan enjoys helping Hyperion customers, both new and established, achieve their financial goals, and his dedication shows. Thanks for your service, Ryan – congratulations!

Always learning, always giving back
Hyperion Bank AVP & Deposit Operations Manager Bridget Jungblut represented the bank at the American Bankers Association’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Conference in Arlington, VA. The conference focused on current and emerging fraud trends, ways to leverage technology to combat fraud, and featured panelists from FinCEN, OFAC, the OCC and the US Treasury Dept for discussions on policy, regulation and interagency coordination in the fight against fraud and financial crime.
Bridget says a fun silver lining was that everyone at the conference was invited to participate in painting a mural to be placed in the Skilled Nursing Unit at Children’s National Hospital in Washington D.C. as part of a sponsored program called Splashes of Hope. Continuing education + community service for the win!

Crawford tradition: On the run for Thanksgiving...
Hyperion’s Charlie Crawford and his son Mitchell Crawford kept up a family tradition by running the Invesco QQQ Thanksgiving Day races, put on by the Atlanta Track Club, both tackling the half-marathon! Runners & walkers also had the option of doing a 5K, mile & dash). Charlie is former board chair of the Track Club and is known to run occasionally.

Also on the agenda talking with CEO, CFO & COO attendees about Wealth Preservation: Building a Resilient Legacy, was Robert Balentine (Chairman of Balentine), a Hyperion friend & client.
