Crews are scheduled to partially demolish the east half of the Cedar Avenue bridge over the I-10 freeway over two consecutive weekends during two overnight shifts (Friday and Saturday nights) in April 2023. A third weekend is tentatively scheduled, if needed.

Directional freeway closures will occur on eastbound (EB) and westbound (WB) I-10 at Cedar Avenue. Crews will close one direction of the freeway during the first weekend of demolition activities, and then switch and close the opposite direction of the freeway during the second weekend. Cedar Avenue will also be closed between Valley Boulevard and Slover Avenue during both weekends. 

Closures:

EB I-10 at Cedar Avenue and Cedar Avenue between Slover Avenue and Valley Boulevard (first weekend)

• Friday, April 14 at 10:00 p.m. to Saturday, April 15 at 6:00 a.m.  
• Saturday, April 15 at 11:59 p.m. to Sunday, April 16 at 7:00 a.m. 

WB I-10 at Cedar Avenue and Cedar Avenue between Slover Avenue and Valley Boulevard (second weekend) 

• Friday, April 21 at 8:00 p.m. to Saturday, April 22 at 4:00 a.m.  
• Saturday, April 22 at 10:00 p.m. to Sunday, April 23 at 6:00 a.m. 

Detours: 

EB/WB I-10 at Cedar Avenue

• Motorists will be directed to exit the freeway using the Cedar Avenue off-ramps, cross the intersection, and reenter the freeway using the Cedar Avenue on-ramps. Alternate detours will include Riverside Avenue and Sierra Avenue.

Cedar Avenue between Valley Boulevard and Slover Avenue

• Motorists will be detoured to use Valley Boulevard, Slover Avenue, Riverside Avenue, and Sierra Avenue. 

The following closures are required next week to facilitate this work on the I-10/Cedar Avenue Interchange Project:

EB CLOSURES:

• EB I-10 Lane Closures between Sierra Avenue and Riverside Avenue: Lanes will be closed nightly from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., Monday, April 10 through Thursday, April 13 (into Friday morning). At least one lane on EB I-10 will be open at all times.
• EB I-10 On- and Off-Ramps at Cedar Avenue: Closed nightly from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., Monday, April 10 through Thursday, April 13 (into Friday morning).
• EB I-10 Closed at Cedar Avenue: All lanes Closed from 10:00 p.m., Friday April 14 to 6:00 a.m., Saturday, April 15 and from 11:59 p.m., Saturday, April 15 to 7:00 a.m., Sunday, April 16.

WB CLOSURES:

• WB I-10 Lane Closures between Pepper Avenue and Sierra Avenue: Lanes will be closed nightly from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., Monday, April 10 through Thursday, April 13 (into Friday morning). At least one lane on WB I-10 will be open at all times.
• WB I-10 On- and Off-Ramps at Cedar Avenue: Closed nightly from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., Monday, April 10 through Thursday, April 13 (into Friday morning).

CEDAR AVENUE CLOSURES:

• Cedar Avenue between Valley Boulevard and Slover Avenue: Closed from 10:00 p.m., Friday April 14 to 6:00 a.m., Saturday, April 15 and from 11:59 p.m., Saturday, April 15 to 7:00 a.m., Sunday, April 16.

The Cedar Avenue Bridge over the I-10 and the railroad tracks will be widened in two stages. Crews are tentatively scheduled to partially demolish the east side of the bridge in April 2023 and will work to reconstruct and widen this portion of the bridge through approximately 12 months. 

Traffic has been shifted onto the west half of the bridge to allow crews to perform the partial demolition. To accommodate this shift, Cedar Avenue has been reduced by one lane in each direction between Orange Street and Valley Boulevard. 

• Northbound (NB) Cedar Avenue will have one through lane (with access to the EB I-10 on-ramp), and one dedicated left turn lane onto the WB I-10 on-ramp.

• Southbound (SB) Cedar Avenue will have one dedicated right turn lane onto the WB I-10 on-ramp, one through lane, and one dedicated left turn lane onto the EB I-10 on-ramp.

Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes. Traffic delays should be expected during bridge reconstruction, please allow extra time to reach your destination and use caution when traveling through work zones. While the east side of the bridge is under construction, pedestrian access will be maintained across the west side of the bridge.

Once reconstruction of the east side of the bridge is completed, crews will then perform bridge widening along the west side, tentatively scheduled to begin in early-2024.

During the reconstruction of the east half of the Cedar Avenue bridge, motorists on Orange Street will be prohibited from making a right turn onto NB Cedar Avenue.

This configuration will be in place for approximately one year wile crews work to widen the east side of the Cedar Avenue bridge. The recommended detour route is shown in green on the map below.

The first of six directional 55-hour freeway closures on SR 210 in the cities of Highland and Redlands is scheduled to begin the weekend of April 14.

The I-10/Cedar Avenue Interchange Project is designed to relieve congestion, enhance safety, and improve traffic operations along Cedar Avenue between Bloomington Avenue and Orange Street. The project will widen the I-10 overcrossing and replace the railroad bridge, provide for roadway improvements along Cedar Avenue, and add capacity to the on- and off-ramps from Cedar Avenue to the I-10. During construction activities may include removing and rebuilding of existing and new structures, digging up roads for utility work, pavement and restriping work, installation of new traffic signals, traffic shifts, intermittent lane closures, and ramp closures. Workers and heavy equipment will be present throughout the project corridor and we ask that you allow for extra time to reach your destination as you may experience delays.
