I-10 Widening and Reconstruction Project

Monthly Public Outreach and Communication Report

State Project H.004100

Project Status

The I-10 Widening and Reconstruction Project continues to make progress as the contractor works concurrently on the temporary trestle bridge, which is anticipated to be completed early March, and on constructing the cofferdams that will support the City Park Lake bridge foundations. This temporary barrier will create a dry working area for crews to begin work on the permanent bridge structure. Excavation work continues in preparation for the construction of the upcoming retaining walls along I-10 near E. Lakeshore Dr.

Additionally, the contractor has begun corridor improvements along Perkins Road under I-10 from Kalurah St. to Ferndale Ave. to improve parking by filing potholes and grading the gravel parking area.

While work is ongoing, residents and motorists throughout the corridor can expect to see an increase in truck traffic, as well as an increase in noise during the day. Upcoming major construction activities will be performed during daytime hours between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. and continues to be monitored by various noise and vibration monitors throughout the corridor.

On November 27, 2023, E. Lakeshore Dr. was closed where it passes beneath I-10 as depicted in red on the accompanying diagram. This local street will remain closed for approximately three years while crews work on the permanent widening of I-10 over City Park Lake. Northbound and southbound motorists on E. Lakeshore Dr. are advised to use Dalrymple Dr. for the duration of this closure.

This portion of E. Lakeshore Dr. will not be accessible to motorists, pedestrians or bicyclists as this is an active construction site.

Crews continue the construction of the temporary trestle bridge across City Park Lake.

Crews construct temporary sheeting to support drainage structure operations at City Park Lake near E. Lakeshore Dr.

About the Project

The I-10 Widening and Reconstruction Project is currently in Stage 1, which includes a portion of the permanent construction of the westbound City Park Lake Bridge, the eastbound service road, widening the westbound flyover curve towards the Mississippi River Bridge and the temporary widening of the westbound corridor from Acadian Thruway to I-110. This stage is anticipated to be completed late 2025, weather permitting.

Once Segment 1 is completed, this project will provide four travel lanes in each direction from west of Washington St. to Acadian Thruway including the Acadian Thruway interchange, as well as roundabouts along Terrace Ave. at Braddock St., the I-10 interchange at Lorri Burgess Ave., and at Dalrymple Dr. at I-10 eastbound. There will also be community connections and context sensitive solutions such as a greenway path connecting the downtown greenway network to the bicycle and pedestrian pathways around the University Lakes and improvements beneath I-10 at Perkins Rd.
