The above rendering shows what a portion of the I-64/264 Interchange Improvements Project will look like when it is completed.
Notice the new, wider exit ramp from I-64 west rising over the City of Norfolk's light rail line before it splits into two distinct ramps:
- Drivers who stay left will continue to mainline I-264E.
- Drivers who want to go to Newtown or Witchduck roads will stay right, toward a new "collector-distributor" (C-D) road serving those exits.
- Notice that prior to joining mainline I-264, the drivers who stay left travel over another road -- the start of the new C-D road serving the Newtown and Witchduck exits. This new movement removes the "weave" that drivers currently face at the I-64 west/I-264 east interchange.
The new C-D road will be extended under the Phase II project, which is scheduled to begin construction in early 2018. If drivers on this C-D road do not exit at Newtown or Witchduck, they will merge into mainline I-264 east.
A final version of the above rendering will be completed this winter and will be displayed on the project website and at VDOT's public outreach events. The final renderings will also show what is being constructed to the south and east of the above image, reflecting the entire Phase I project.
