Construction Begins on Segment II
Shoulder Strengthening Underway

Construction began Wednesday, October 26, on the second of three segments to widen Interstate 64 between 1 mile west of Route 199 Humelsine Parkway (exit 242) and where the Segment I project ends at 0.54 miles east of Route 238 Yorktown Road (exit 247). 

Initial work will include shoulder strengthening beginning in the eastbound direction for approximately two weeks, followed by similar work in the westbound direction.

Segment I Work Activities

Recently Completed

  • Completed piles at Abutment B of the westbound Industrial Park Drive Bridges
  • Started forming pier caps for the eastbound and westbound Industrial Park Drive Bridges
  • Completed piles at Abutment B and placed concrete for Abutment A footing of the Fort Eustis Boulevard Bridges
  • Placed concrete for Abutment A footings of the westbound Lee Hall Reservoir Bridge
  • Started base asphalt paving between Denbigh Boulevard and Industrial Park Drive
  • Completed placing cement treated aggregate subbase west of Denbigh Boulevard

Current Status:

  • Driving piles at Abutment A for the eastbound Industrial Park Drive Bridge
  • Continue forming pier caps at the east- and westbound Industrial Park Drive Bridges
  • Start forming Abutment B footings of Fort Eustis Boulevard Bridges
  • Continue paving activities on the eastbound median widening west of Denbigh Boulevard
  • Continue placing drainage layer and base asphalt paving on the eastbound median widening between Denbigh Boulevard and Industrial Park Drive
  • Continue grading along the eastbound median widening east of Lee Hall Reservoir
  • Continue median barrier installation between Denbigh Boulevard and Industrial Park Drive

Upcoming Work Activities:

  • Continue placing cement-treated aggregate subbase, cement-stabilized subgrade and asphalt pavement in the median
  • Continue substructure construction at the abutments of the Fort Eustis Boulevard Bridges and Lee Hall Reservoir Bridges
  • Continue installation of median barrier footings
  • Start construction of the retaining wall at Abutment B of the Industrial Park Drive Bridges
  • Start rehabilitation work at existing Lee Hall Reservoir Bridges and Fort Eustis Boulevard Bridges

Segment II Work Activities

Current Status:

  • Preliminary work includes on site surveying activities and design development
  • Paving and milling of the shoulder lanes are scheduled to take place through November

Upcoming Work Activities:

  • Construction barriers and median work to begin by the end of 2016

Traffic Impacts 
Lane Closures:
Weeknight east- and westbound alternating single-lane closures, Sundays through Thursdays, beginning as early as 7 p.m. and ending at  5 a.m. the following morning between Jefferson Avenue (exit 255) and Route 199 (Humelsine Parkway) (exit 242).

One travel lane in each direction will remain open to traffic at all times.  All construction work is dependent upon weather conditions.

Traveling in the Work Zone: 
Westbound truck traffic on Interstate 64 is now restricted to the right lane between Jefferson Avenue (exit 255) and Yorktown Road (exit 247).

A reduced 55mph speed limit is also in effect 24/7 in this area in both the east- and westbound directions. 
Alternate Routes:
Beat the backups and find alternate routes around the work zone by viewing the Alternate Routes Map now available on the I-64 Widening web site.

  Please obey the reduced 55mph speed limit which is in effect 24/7 in both the east- and westbound work zones of the project between Jefferson Avenue (exit 255) and Lee Hall (exit 247).
