Detour on High Rise Bridge this Weekend for VDOT Maintenance Work
Contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation are scheduled to perform maintenance on the High Rise Bridge this weekend, necessitating a series of overnight full closures of I-64 between I-464 (exit 291A) and George Washington Highway (exit 296), weather permitting. During this time, signed detours of I-64 will be in place.

Overnight Detour Southbound Military Highway
at the I-64 Overpass
9 p.m. to 5 a.m., Aug. 26 and Aug. 27
Southbound Military Highway between the I-64 on- and off-ramps will be closed to all traffic overnight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning on the evenings of Wednesday, Aug. 26 and Thursday, Aug. 27.

Motorists should follow the detour below. Detour information will also be designated with signage along the roadway. Northbound traffic on Military Highway will not be impacted by this temporary closure.

This closure will allow construction crews to safely continue work on the widening of the I-64 overpass as part of the I-64 Southside Widening and High Rise Bridge Project.
Traveling South on Military Highway

  • Right onto the I-64 Ramp toward Suffolk
  • Take left Exit 299B to I-664 toward Bowers Hill | Suffolk | Newport News
  • Take Exit 13B to Military Highway
  • Turn right at the intersection of Military Highway/Joliff Road to continue on W. Military Highway
  • Turn right onto the I-64E / I-264 ramp (in front of Frank’s Truck Stop)
  • Keep right to I-64 WB toward Virginia Beach, Exit 15B
  • Take Exit 297 to Military Highway
