I-64 Southside Widening and High Rise Bridge Expansion Project

Lane Closures, Aug. 20-28

Motorists can expect alternating, single-lane closures on I-64 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. at the following locations:

  • I-64 east between Great Bridge Boulevard (exit 292), Aug. 26
  • I-64 west between Bowers Hill and Military Highway (exit 297), Aug. 21
  • I-64 west at George Washington Highway (exit 296), Aug. 21-23
  • I-64 west from Military Highway (exit 297) to George Washington Highway (exit 296)
  • I-64 east from I-464 (exit 291) to the High Rise Bridge, Aug. 26 


Motorists can expect the following traffic shifts:

  • I-64 west between Bowers Hill interchange and Military Highway (exit 297), traffic will be shifted slightly towards the median beginning as early as Aug. 22
  • I-64 east between I-464 (exit 291) and Great Bridge Boulevard (exit 292), traffic will be shifted slightly towards the median beginning as early as Aug. 27

Full overnight closure of the I-264 west ramp to I-64 west, Aug. 20 from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.

 

The I-264 west ramp to I-64 west will be closed Aug. 20 from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.


Motorists should follow the detour below. Detour information will also be designated with signage along the roadway.


1.  Stay right to I-664 | Route 13 | Route 58 | Route 460

2.  Take exit 13B to Military Highway

3.  Turn right at the intersection of Military Highway/Jolliff Road to continue on W. Military Highway

4.  Turn left onto the I-64 east / I-264 ramp (in front of Frank’s Truck Stop)

5.  Keep right to I-64 west towards Chesapeake/Virginia Beach (exit 15B)

Overnight ramp closures on I-64 west off-ramp to Route 168 south (exit 291B), Aug. 21, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.


Motorists traveling on I-64 west should use the following detour:

  • Exit to I-464 north (exit 291A)
  • Exit right to I-64 east (exit 1)
  • Continue straight and exit right to Route 17/Route 168 south (exit 291B)
  • End detour

Full closure of the I-464 south ramp to I-64 east, Aug. 26, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.


The exit ramp from I-464 south to I-64 east (exit 1B) will be closed on Aug. 26 (contingency date Aug. 27), from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.


Motorists should follow detour signs utilizing exit 1A and follow the cloverleaf to access I-64 east.

Overnight ramp closure on I-64 west to Great Bridge Boulevard (exit 292), Aug. 25, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.



Motorists traveling on I-64 west toward Virginia Beach should follow detour signs utilizing:


  • Exit 291A to I-464 north
  • Exit 1 to I-64 east
  • Exit 291B to Route 168 south
  • Right exit to Great Bridge Boulevard



End detour on Great Bridge Boulevard

Ongoing Flagging Operations on Shell Road at the I-64 Overpass through Aug. 26, and Full Closure on Shell Road at the I-64 Overpass, Aug. 25-27


Flagging operations on Shell Road near the I-64 overpass that began on Aug. 1 will continue each Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. until Aug. 26.


Additionally, Shell Road will be closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic at the I-64 overpass beginning as early as 3 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, through 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27.


Motorists should use South Military Highway, Canal Drive and George Washington Highway to navigate around this closure. Detour information will also be designated with signage along the roadway.


Residents off Firman Street will be able to turn left out of the neighborhood onto Shell Road. All residents on Shell Road will maintain driveway and delivery access during this detour.

All construction schedules are pending, due to weather or unforeseen circumstances. Changes to the schedule will be updated on the project website traffic alerts page.
