I-64 Southside Widening and High Rise Bridge Expansion Project
Overnight Detours Needed to Facilitate New Traffic Pattern on I-64 West near the Great Bridge Blvd Overpass
As part of the upcoming traffic shift on I-64 west (towards Virginia Beach) listed below, motorists can expect the following detours necessary to safely facilitate the shift.

Motorists are advised to follow detour signage in place for these overnight ramp closures.

Thursday, Jan. 21, at 11 p.m., to Friday, Jan. 22, at 5 a.m.

  • I-64W (exit 291A) to I-464N
  • I-64W (exit 291B) to I-464S/168S
  • I-464 S (exit 1A) to I-64W

Friday, Jan. 22, at 11 p.m., to Saturday, Jan. 23, at 5 a.m.

  • VA-168N (exit 15A) to I-64W
  • I-64W (exit 290B) to southbound Battlefield Boulevard

Two lanes of traffic will be maintained at all times during daytime hours, with overnight single lane closures 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, to 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, and 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, to 9 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 24.

As a reminder, motorists traveling on I-64 westbound (towards Virginia Beach) should expect a new traffic pattern from the Great Bridge Blvd overpass to Exit 290B (Battlefield Boulevard). Traffic will be shifted to the far right beginning as early as Saturday, Jan. 23.

The existing barrier currently separating the collector-distributor (CD/outside) lanes and mainline will be removed. In this new lane configuration, the three westbound lanes of traffic will be shifted to the right/south to the general area of the currently existing CD/outside lanes and a work zone will be established in the median area.

As part of this new traffic pattern, left and right shoulders will be closed. All ramps and exits will be maintained. I-64 eastbound (towards Suffolk) traffic will not be impacted as part of this traffic shift.

This temporary traffic pattern will be in place until Fall 2021 allowing crews to complete a reconstruction of the existing median and I-64 mainline areas to prepare for the tie-in of the new High Rise Bridge.

All project work and scheduled closures are dependent upon weather conditions.
