I-64 Southside Widening and High Rise Bridge Expansion Project
Full Directional Closures Scheduled on I-64 Near the Great Bridge Boulevard Overpass - UPDATED
Nightly detours in place for demolition work of the former Great Bridge Boulevard overpass

As part of the ongoing construction of the I-64 Southside Widening and High Rise Bridge Project, motorists can expect the following full directional closures of I-64 with overnight detours to safely allow for the demolition and removal of the old Great Bridge Boulevard overpass over I-64.

I-64 west (towards Virginia Beach): Friday, Nov. 19, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-64 east (towards Suffolk): Saturday, Nov. 20, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Traffic on Great Bridge Boulevard be will shifted on to the new overpass beginning as early as Thursday morning, Nov. 18 (see project alert) and will not be impacted by this detour on I-64.
I-64 DETOUR 

Motorists traveling on I-64 west (towards Virginia Beach) will be detoured at Exit 296 (Route 17/ George Washington Highway)

  • Left on George Washington Highway (Route 17 north)
  • Right on S. Military Highway
  • Cross the Gilmerton Bridge
  • Exit right to I-464 south
  • Exit 1A to I-64 west (towards Virginia Beach) 
  • Continue on I-64 west

Motorists traveling I-64 east (towards Suffolk) will be detoured at Exit 291A to I-464

  • Exit 291A to I-464
  • Exit 2 to S. Military Highway (Route 13 south)
  • Left on S. Military Highway (Route 13 south)
  • Cross the Gilmerton Bridge
  • Exit right to I-64

The bridge demolition work will also utilize overnight, single-lane closures in this area of I-64, beginning as early as 8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21 through as late as 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 24 and will resume on Monday, Nov. 29 at 8 p.m.
