I-64 Southside Widening and High Rise Bridge Expansion Project
Reduced Speed Ahead: Speed Limit to be reduced to 55 mph within the project corridor beginning as early as May 15
 
The speed limit on I-64 between Battlefield Boulevard and Bowers Hill will be reduced to 55 mph as early as May 15 for the safety of motorists and workers. This speed limit reduction will be announced within the work zone on portable message signs and new signage along the corridor. Please eliminate distractions while driving through work zones.

Construction Activities Beyond the Interstate

In addition to the new High Rise Bridge and the replacement of the Great Bridge Boulevard Bridge, the I-64 Southside Widening Project includes the expansion of six bridges over I-64: at Yadkin Road, Military Highway and Shell Road.

To accommodate construction, lane closures and flagging operations will continue on Yadkin Road, Military Highway and Shell Road near where the interstate crosses these local roads. Military Highway has been reduced to one lane in each direction where it passes under I-64 in Chesapeake for approximately eight months. Day-time (9 a.m. - 3 p.m.) flagging operations at Yadkin and Shell roads continue as crews prepare to widen these bridges over I-64.

Traffic Impacts | Lane Closures

  • Speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph on I-64 from Battlefield Blvd to Bowers Hill beginning as early as May 15. Please eliminate distractions while driving through work zones.

  • I-64 single-lane closures both directions between South Military Highway and Greenbrier Parkway, Monday-Friday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

  • Intermittent day-time flagging operations at Shell Road and Yadkin Road, 9 a.m to 3 p.m.

Lane Reduction at Military Highway Under the I-64 Overpass

  • Military Hwy will be reduced to one lane where it passes under I-64 in Chesapeake beginning February 25 for approximately 8 months. This will allow crews to widen I-64 over Military Highway.
Restricted Access at Libertyville Road and Bainbridge Blvd Intersection 

  • Beginning March 20, access to Bainbridge Boulevard from Libertyville Road will be restricted. Additionally, there will be no turns from Bainbridge Boulevard onto Libertyville Road. Motorists traveling on Bainbridge Boulevard will be able to continue straight through the Libertyville Road intersection. 

  • Schedule is dependent on weather and unexpected delays.
