Work accomplished in 2022

Work began on the I-90/SH-41 Interchange in August 2022. This year the contractor focused on I-90 and the eastbound bridges.
I-90 Work

Eastbound I-90
  • Placed temporary pavement and barriers to shift traffic.
  • Built drainage area near eastbound off-ramp.
  • Built a portion of the new eastbound I-90 off-ramp.

Westbound I-90
  • Widened the I-90 westbound on-ramp to create room for a work zone.
Bridge Work

Crews began work on three permanent eastbound bridges and one temporary bridge. As a reminder, ITD will build six permanent bridges and two temporary bridges.

Bridge work for 2022 included:
  • Pile driving for the bridge foundations (a steel pipe is driven into soil until it reaches a hard layer to support the bridge).
  • Building abutments (part of the bridge support).
  • Demolished sections of the I-90 eastbound bridge.

Look ahead to 2023
Next year the contractor will:

  • Continue to build the I-90 eastbound bridges.
  • Work on the temporary bridge over SH-41.
  • Shift traffic on I-90 to the outside to construct the new lanes and bridges in the median.
  • Begin work on Seltice/SH-41 alignment.
Rendering of the new SH-41 Interchange
Work on this project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2025.

When complete:
  • The new interchange design will efficiently move more traffic through the area. The I-90 westbound “loop” on-ramp will no longer curve and all ramps will come together at a single point and be controlled by a traffic signal.
  • Upgrades to the interchange will include replacing existing bridges, adding new bridges, realigning on- and off-ramps and constructing capacity for future interstate expansion.
  • ITD will also improve the SH-41 and Mullan Avenue intersection and local connectivity south of the interchange.
  • Grade separations and improvements to the SH-41 Trail and Centennial Trail will provide safer travel for bicycles and pedestrians.
