Good Manners Builds Good Character
|
Ms. Glenda Horton Manning—a published author, mother, grandmother and educator— teaches a six-part, etiquette class for Level II scholars at CN Jenkins covering topics like writing thank you notes, hygiene, telephone manners and more. Each week, she builds upon the lessons from the previous weeks, bringing along her 10-year-old granddaughter, Lauren, to participate.
This week, she emphasizes the importance of hygiene through an interactive game using a drum beat and hygiene vocabulary flash cards. Scholars pass the cards in a circle to the drum beat and each time a scholar receives a new card, she reminds them to say thank you.

Ms. Glenda follows this activity by reading a book she wrote, “Marzetta Stood In For Mama,” about her own life. The book describes Ms. Glenda's fourth grade teacher who helped take care of Glenda when her mother wasn’t able to—cleaning behind her ears, brushing her teeth and keeping her hair neat. Ms. Glenda reminds scholars about the importance of hygiene using the vocabulary words from the previous activity while mentioning how her teacher made a difference in her community by helping her.
|
She closes the lesson by giving Reverend Dr. Jerry Lytle Cannon, the pastor of CN Jenkins, a large stack of thank you notes written by the scholars thanking him for allowing Freedom School to use the space at CN Jenkins. Ms. Doris Boyd, Volunteer Coordinator at CN Jenkins, whispers to a FSP staff member nearby, "He’s going to keep those thank you notes for years to come!"

Last Friday, Level III scholars grabbed their popcorn to watch the historically acclaimed film,
The Great Debaters
for Movie Day. The movie is based on the true story of Melvin B. Tolson, a professor at Wiley College, who established a black debate team that challenged the prestigious Harvard University during a debate competition. After the movie, scholars participated in an activity that taught them how to properly agree and disagree on a variety of topics.
