As the final week of Freedom School comes to an end, scholars planned out their dream jobs, engaged in the world of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) during STEM Day and practiced a healthier lifestyle from Heart of Gold Community Day. Exploring the World of S.T.E.M.
She.Digital, Yeti Robotics and Digi Bridge are a few of the 17 STEM-based companies that participated in STEM Day for nearly 200 scholars. STEM Day is an event sponsored by Red Ventures , in partnership with Charlotte Works and MeckEd, which gives scholars exposure to science, technology, engineering and mathematics career fields and companies.

A Surprise Visit
The Scholastic Book Fair, sponsored by American Airlines and an Anonymous Donor , ended this week. After level II scholars of Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle and Renaissance West STEAM Academy shopped for books, a volunteer read a book from Clifford the Big Red Dog book series while Clifford acted out the story! Lots of hugs and laughter erupted as Clifford danced around following the narrative.

Heart of Gold

After suffering a sudden cardiac arrest  on the court, former professional basketball player, Omar Carter, raises awareness for cardiovascular health throughout the Charlotte community. Last week, the Omar Carter Foundation hosted Heart of Gold Community day for level III scholars at Marie G. Davis Middle. Scholars engaged in a physical fitness relay, CPR training and Heart Enrichment with companies such as Abbott and Zoll Medical. They even learned how to prepare a healthy meal!
"I enjoyed the physical activity exercises" said Antwoine Norris, a level III scholar from The Grove. "I learned that working hard is something you do without excuses."
