This past weekend I did the first round of the NYC Midnight Flash Fiction Challenge 2021. Friday night, we were sent our assignments, and forty-eight short hours later, we had to hand in a maximum of 1000 words to complete the challenge. And then comes the waiting...

These challenges are so much fun, at least if you are out of school. Otherwise, they are not that different from English finals. I am always reminded of how much of a jolt of creativity I get going up against a deadline. That is my Holy Grail of writing, the jolt of creativity.

I hope it carried over to the MICRO FICTION in the section below. This week there is both a celebrity sighting and a fable.

I am out for supplies in METHOD WRITING, but I found you some never published poems that came out of car washing Layli Long Soldier last year that I hope you will enjoy. I also included a blurb about her spectacular poetry collection WHEREAS in the WHAT I AM section.

As always, I am grateful and honored for your subscription. Thank you!

WHAT I AM...

IGLongSoldier.jpg

Poetry is an acquired taste for me. It wasn't until I started with METHOD WRITING that I came to appreciate where poetry is superior to prose. Being wordy myself, I am always in awe of how much poems can evoke with such few words. To me, poetry often seems the distillation of prose. All the more praise to Layli Long Soldier, who masters both. Her highly acclaimed poetry collection WHEREAS is part "traditional" poems, part statements leaning more towards prose poetry. All of it has a searing energy and is well worth rereading.

My guilty pleasure is grime. Not the kind that appears around the edge of the bathtub but the innovative style of hip hop that originated in the UK in the early 2000s. The GOAT of this subgenre is IMO (and according to himself) Stormzy, though Dave is giving him a good run for his money. Stormzy's album Heavy Is The Head has been on high rotation on my Spotify during the pandemic. Talk about eloquent and timely poetry that is reminiscent of the socio-political lyrics of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. And more shallow, I am just a sucker for a British accent. Last week Dave and Stormzy released a new single, Clash, together. You're welcome!
