After 50 Years of Hip Hop its Relationship with Jewellery Lives On

Selina Denman Sarah Maisey Aug 11, 2023 From the simple gold chains sported by the pioneering rappers of the 1970s to the bold, customized creations of the 1990s and the bejewelled “sky’s-the-limit” pieces of the 2000s, the worlds of hip-hop and jewellery have always been immutably linked. Hip-hop's decades-long love affair with jewellery has also birthed dookie ropes, nameplate necklaces, four-finger rings and bejewelled grills. “I’ve been telling stories with my attire and adornments for as long as I’ve been telling them with beats and rhymes,” rapper Slick Rick writes in the foreword to Vikki Tobak’s new book, Ice Cold: A Hip-Hop Jewelry History, touching on how clothing and accessories are as integral to hip-hop culture as the music itself. In this month's Architectural Digest (AD), one of the more obvious inspirations to be featured is Chanel’s "dazzling new Rodeo Drive boutique" that celebrates the house’s long-standing ties to Hollywood. Jewelry Artist Wallace Chan Sustainability Is About Honoring Materials

Anthony DeMarco Senior Contributor Sustainability was the main topic of discussion during the recently held “State of the Art Jewelry Summit” at Harvard University. Well-known jewelry industry professionals joined Harvard educators to discuss the many facets of creating a sustainable industry. Topics included detailed analysis of the sustainability of mining, designers who incorporate sustainability into their creations, ways of helping artisan miners who are often neglected in the jewelry industry supply chain, and the global consequences of not taking sustainability seriously. Christie’s Wallace Chan: The Wheel of Time Christie’s proudly presents Wallace Chan: The Wheel of Time, the largest exhibition of works by the master jewellery artist in Europe. Comprising over 150 pieces of one-of-a-kind jewellery creations, the display features some of the artist’s most iconic examples, including Stilled Life, an imperial jadeite brooch/sculpture that masterfully captures a cicada resting on a bamboo leaf and Metamorphosis, a stunning butterfly brooch that harmoniously combines emeralds, real butterfly wings and intricately carved rock crystal and mother of pearl. Additionally, the exhibition will feature around 20 never-before-seen works and a series of titanium and iron sculptures. President Calls for Rapid Development of Gems & Jewellery Industry

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has highlighted the importance of promptly addressing challenges in the gem and jewellery sector to boost Sri Lanka’s revenue from exports. The President has urged officials to swiftly provide comprehensive plans for achieving the country’s objective of bolstering annual export earnings through enhancements in gem and jewellery exports and re-exports. According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), the matter was discussed during a recent discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat to address issues within the gem and jewellery industry. A Few More Gems at the Auctions Unusual Noteworthy Pieces

We love finding unusual and important gems at auction. the following are just a sample of what we found last week. The pear-shaped Rhodonite (right) weighs 10.13 carats, and is framed by a double border of round brilliant-cut diamonds and yellow diamonds. It is accompanied by an AIGS Gem Lab report no. GF22083458, dated 2 September 2022, stating that the Rhodonite of reddish-Orange colour is of Natural origin. It sold for its estimated value of AU$6,765 including the premium. Tempting you to click through to the feature in the online magazine, we found an unmounted "coloured" diamond. The round brilliant-cut "Fancy Yellow (S-T)" diamond weighs 6.15 carats. It was accompanied by a GSL report no. AA67150, dated 8 December 2022, stating that the diamond is Fancy Yellow (S-T) colour and VS1 clarity. It sold for AU$104,550 including the premium!
