Two key pieces of legislation sit on the Governor's desk awaiting signature. The community has previously come together to advocate for AB 953 and SB 178, and now we need you again for the final stretch.
AB 953, introduced by Assemblymember Weber, would modernize California's definition of racial and identity profiling and require police officers to document the race, gender, and age of each person they stop. This data would be collected and used for annual reports to be submitted to a new state board on profiling.
CAIR-CA joined hundreds of activists at the State Capitol earlier this month, calling for the state legislature and Governor's support.
SB 178 has received bipartisan support in the Senate and Assembly. Also known as the California Electronic Communications Privacy Act (CalECPA), SB 178 was introduced by Senators Leno and Anderson. It would protect against warrantless government access to mobile devices, sensitive emails, text messages, digital documents, metadata, and location information. CalECPA would provide proper transparency and oversight, while allowing for appropriate exceptions in the case of public safety.
CalECPA was part of CAIR-CA's legislative agenda for Muslim Day at the Capitol in April where nearly 500 Muslims from all over California traveled to Sacramento to meet with their legislators to advocate on the bill.
With just two minutes and a few clicks this afternoon, you can send a message to Governor Brown, urging him to sign AB 953 and SB 178 into law. You can make a difference!
