Hello Megan,
Do you ever hear yourself saying, “if I act that way when I am old, just slap me!” Or, “I hope I don’t act that way in old age.” But, if most of us do become less reasonable, and more rigid in our thinking, what can we do now to help our later selves, and the people who may end up taking care of us.
Here are seven tips and ideas:
- Purge your house early and often.
- Invest in your physical health.
- Be open to buying hearing aids. Your brain adjusts better the sooner you get them.
-
Write a letter to your future self. “Unlike my mom, I promise not to…..” Check out this website: https://www.futureme.org/
- Visit a few retirement places and put your name on a list. Most of the nicer retirement facilities in Austin have waiting lists that can be years long.
- Hire people to help you. These go-to people later in life, such as the lawn guy, handy person, cleaning person, dog walker, hairdresser, massage therapist, therapist, financial planner and pharmacist, can come through for you when you need them.
- Get familiar and comfortable with rideshares and/or public transportation.
We have found that this can be one of the more challenging transitions our clients face. Our contacts and support have helped others and we would be honored to help you prepare for this next step, as well.

Sincerely,
Cass, Megan and Bleckley
