Brown Patch Fungus Update

It’s that time of year again… Fall is here, winter is on the way, temperatures are dropping, mornings are foggy.. and brown patch fungus has made its appearance.

Brown patch fungus is one of the most damaging turf diseases in Florida, and this time of year promotes the right conditions for resurgence of the pathogen that exists in the turf’s soil.

On the bright side, this fungus really only develops in about 10% of St. Augustine grasses and about 60% of Zoysia grasses, Bahia grass is not affected by this fungus.

Our technicians have been keeping an eye out and checking for brown patch fungus during each of their visits. If they notice that your lawn has this fungus present, they will avoid applying any fertilizer and weed control to the affected areas.

If the previously mentioned products are used on brown patch fungus, it will only make it worse; instead, a fungicide application will be applied which will encourage the grass to heal. This application is topical and systemic, meaning that the product will sit and dry, absorbing into the grass as it grows. This helps get rid of the fungus and prevent more from growing.

Any watering and mowing of the grass will need to stop for up to 3 weeks in order for our fungicide to have the best results.

Brown patch fungus is very aggressive; watering or mowing will only increase the likelihood of it spreading.

If this fungus is present in your lawn, your technician will make note of it on your invoice and let you know of any new watering or mowing instructions.
