Council District 7 Newsletter
January 19, 2018 - In This Issue:
Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I hope your New Year is off to a great start. We are continuing our cleaning efforts and are gearing up for more Dumpster Day events and neighborhood clean ups in 2018. We will be kicking off the year with our first creek clean up of the year this Saturday, January 20. We will be meeting at  9am  at the Tully Ballfields. We hope to see you there!

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending a meet and greet with residents of the Almaden Family Apartments, who also graciously hosted the event. We had a good turnout with 20 residents in attendance. Thank you all for participating and raising great questions. In the next coming weeks, my office will be working closely with the property management office and residents to schedule a Clean-Up with Tam. Additionally, we will be connecting with our Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services to help address some park concerns raised at the meeting. I want to thank Tammy Berard for working with us to schedule this event. As a reminder, if you are interested in scheduling an event in your neighborhood, please contact Orion Dam at  (408) 535-4907  or via email at  Orion.Dam@sanjoseca.gov . I look forward to hearing from you.

Lastly, levels of fear are in all-time high in our immigrant communities and would like to remind you all that the City of San Jose together with our immigrant empowerment organizations are pushing to create a safe place for immigrant communities. If you would like to report an ICE raid or need immediate support if ICE comes to your home, workplace or neighborhood please contact the Rapid Response Network (RRN) hotline number at  (408) 290-1144

I f you have any questions, concerns or suggestions on how we can improve our community, feel free to contact me at  (408) 535-4907  or email me at  district7@sanjoseca.gov.

Sincerely,

Tam Nguyen

FRANKLIN MCKINLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT OFFICE
This past Wednesday, I had the honor of participating at the Franklin McKinley School District Partners in Education Luncheon panel to cover topics impacting our youth and families in our community. I want to thank Superintendent Juan Cruz for putting together this much needed event. The luncheon brought over 30 leaders from faith-based organizations and local non-profits. It allowed for an open space for everyone to share innovative ideas that can help us continue raising the bar for education in the Silicon Valley. It is only through partnerships that we can cultivate profound change.

ONE YEAR COMMEMORATION OF SAN JOSE FLOOD RESPONSE - STILL A NEED FOR HOUSING

As we approach the one-year commemoration of the Coyote Creek Flood, we want to thank all who provided assistance and housing to those individuals and families that were impacted by this unfortunate event.  It is with your help that we were successful in rehousing 210 households, but there is more work to do.  Currently, there are still 25 households that remain displaced by the flood and need new permanent housing.

If you have any apartments available for rent between the ranges of $1,500 to $2,700 a month, please contact Lindsey Caldwell at lcaldwell@catholiccharitiesscc.org.  Lindsey is working directly with the Coyote Creek flood survivors.

Your help makes a difference. Thank you for your partnership.

USEFUL INFORMATION
RAPID RESPONSE NETWORK

The Rapid Response Network in Santa Clara County is a community defense project developed to protect immigrant families from deportation. They provide moral and accompaniment support during and after immigration operations in our community, and activate immigration attorneys when needed. The number is (408) 290-1144.

Briefly, these four things will happen when contacting the RRN:
  • Bilingual dispatchers (Eng/Spanish) will help the caller assert their rights over the phone. [For other languages, a third party interpreter service will be connected to the call.]
  • The Network dispatcher will send trained Rapid Responders to the impacted area. They will confirm if a raid is taking place and conduct legal observation of any ICE agents.
  • If someone was detained or is at risk of being detained, we activate immigration attorneys immediately.
  • The Network provides moral and family support to community members who have had a loved one detained by immigration.
