We are proud to announce our American Indian College Fund 2022-2023 Student of the Year Award to Yael Yisrael for her outstanding work here at Iḷisaġvik College!
Funded by the Adolph Coors Foundation, The Student of the Year Award aims to recognize the academic achievements, community involvement, and commitment to excellence and growth of an outstanding scholar at each Tribal College/University. This award includes a $1,200 scholarship!
Yael will be the first of her five siblings to graduate college. She proudly maintains a 4.0 GPA and is set to graduate with her Associate of Applied Science in Accounting this Spring 2023. After graduation, Yael's goals are to find work for a native corporation and then slowly work toward a bachelor's degree and CPA certification.
Yael's passions include reading, gardening, DIY projects and arts and crafts. She enjoys berry picking, fishing, camping with family and learning both Tlingit and Japanese. She recently learned how to prepare, can, and smoke salmon and is very excited to share her new skills and bounties with family.
Aarigaa Tavrapiallak Yael!
Iḷisaġvik College students, Marie Stackhouse, Anna Henry, Carlos Soto and Staff members Simon Aina (Student Life Manager/ Residence Advisor) and Christine Coll (First Year Coordinator), attended the 39th Annual American Indian Higher Education Consortium’s (AIHEC) Student Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico from March 4-7, 2023.
This year’s theme was “Living Our Ancestor’s Prayers” which recognizes the dreams/ visions our descendants have that Indigenous cultures and languages would thrive through the tribal college movement. The conference had an amazing schedule with different student competitions, general sessions and cultural activities that helped us to learn more and gave opportunities to grow and network with other TCUs.
Carlos, a First-Year student, enrolled in the business program, joined the Chess competition. He did an incredible job and was able to reach round 3 of the competition. Marie, an Iñupiaq Studies student, joined the Art Competition where she showcased her masterpiece – Iñupiaq Dancing Mittens. Many loved her art piece and inquired about it. Anna, a First-Year student who is also enrolled in the business program, joined many different learning sessions. All the students were great as they represented the college well via networking with fellow TCUs and voted in the AIHEC Student Congress (ASC). All the keynote speakers were exceptional and inspiring. They shared the importance of believing in oneself, serving our people, and reaping the harvest of what the ancestors have sewn into the future generations. They also communicated the vital role of the tribal colleges and universities.
Iḷisaġvik and Barrow High School Alumna Daphne Mueller and Professor Linda Nicholas-Figueroa visited Barrow High School recently to talk about the benefits of the Dual Credit program at Iḷisaġvik. Daphne took dual credit classes at Iḷisaġvik when she was a Barrow High School student, eventually becoming Professor Nicholas-Figueroa’s research assistant. She went on to graduate from UAF with a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences with a concentration in Cell and Molecular Biology in December 2022. Aarigaa tavrapiallak, Daphne, and thank you for being such an effective advocate for Iḷisaġvik!
Linda Nicholas-Figueroa (Associate Professor of Biology and Chemistry) and two of her students, Joyce Kompkoff Peterson (top image) and Sophie Kitsick (bottom image) attended the 2023 American Association for the Advancement of Science Meeting from March 2 - 6 in Washington, DC. They had a great time at the meeting!
