We are proud to announce that Vincent Elkins has received the American Indian College Fund 2023-2024 Student of the Year Award!

Funded by the Adolph Coors Foundation, The Student of the Year Award aims to recognize the academic achievements, community involvement, and commitment to excellence and growth of an outstanding scholar at each Tribal College/University. This award includes a $1,200 scholarship!

Vincent is 18 years old and a graduate from Barrow High School's Class of 2023. He was born in Utqiaġvik, AK and has lived here his entire life.

He says, "I work very hard to accomplish my academic goals in college to make my family proud. My mother passed away within the first week of my first college semester, and from that point on, I decided that everything I do is for her, and my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ whom I give all the glory."

Aarigaa Tavrapiallak Vincent!

We are grateful for our Iḷisaġvik College President, Justina Wilhelm who has contributed immensely to our North Slope communities. Quyanaqpak Alaska Business Magazine for this wonderful highlight!

Read the article here:

Iḷisaġvik College Board of Trustees and the North Slope Borough School District Board of Education had a productive joint meeting on March 5th. The meeting started with ceremonial lighting of the seal oil lamp or qulliq.

Shared initiatives included: Memorandum of Agreement, Ilisaurriġuqta (teacher training) program, and Qatqiññiaġvit (workforce/construction trades). The trustees and board members heard from the students and spent time on issues and how they can jointly support ALL our students' well-being. The meeting was facilitated by Jana Pausauraq Harcharek & Rachel Naŋinaaq Edwardson. A joint resolution was approved and was stated, “Happy to see two entities working together for all our students in the region.”

The meeting ended with a potluck and aġġi performance by Barrow High School Dance Group.

Quyanaqpauraq -thank you very much

Savaqatigiiḷḷuatapaluktugut - We are working together very well.

Iḷisaġvik College traveled to the Aleut Community of St. Paul Island (ACSPI) to participate in their annual meeting. President Wilhelm shared a video greeting highlighting the strength of our relationship with the community and the Bering Sea Campus, and Dean of Academic Affairs, Peter Snow, presented in person about Iḷisaġvik College programs and touched on our shared goals and values. We had the chance to meet with their Tribal leadership and had wonderful tours of the island and their facilities despite the inclement weather. Iḷisaġvik is excited to grow our relationship with ACSPI, including dual credit students, workforce classes, and students seeking degrees and certificates. Quyanaqpak to the entire island for being such gracious hosts!

IC Student Government and our Recruiter, Amon Barry ran this fun competition with our Glimpse students to be the fastest and most accurate typer of the day! A great opportunity to prepare middle school students for college and beyond!

We love having Marisa as part of our Tuzzy Library team at IC!

She can be reached at (907) 852-1717 or via email at [email protected].

Quyarugut savaqatigivlutin!

We are grateful to have you as a co-worker!

Aarigaa tavrapiallak Annie Saganna!
Iḷisaġvik College student, Annie Saganna, was accepted as a paid summer intern for the 2024 American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) Climate Resilience program. AIHEC hosts the Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCU) Climate Resilience Student Research Program, a 12-week summer experiential learning opportunity through which undergraduate students participate in identifying and addressing climate change and energy issues in their respective American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
Annie shares with us: "I am thankful and honored to have this opportunity to work with AIHEC-TCU Climate Resilience Student Research Program! I am very excited to learn more and gain experience in this field; while working towards ways to address the effects of climate change here in the arctic."
We can't wait to hear more about Annie's experiences! Here is a little bit about the program below:
