Greetings Mamas!
It is so nice to be back in San Francisco. As most of you know I've had a busy and full spring - I turned 50 and took my prenatal training on the road to China! I absolutely LOVE what I do, and if you haven't heard me say it I want to do this work for a long time!  I'm literally waiting for the child of one of the mamas that I've worked with to show up at one of my prenatal yoga classes. Then I will celebrate, not retire but celebrate!

It is my goal to empower you, and in each of my newsletters I spotlight women in our community (scroll below!) that do incredible work to support mamas. P lease share with any of your pregnant or new mama friends!

I hope you'll join me for an upcoming event - dive deeper into prenatal yoga at the stunning new 1440 Multiversity near Santa Cruz this summer, practice prenatal yoga with me on Amazon, connect with other women in our next Mamas Self Care event in the Fall (re-scheduled from last weekend), and get your prenatal yoga teacher certification (I will not teach my Mama Tree Level 2 Training again until 2019) + much more.

++ Big thanks to my amazing Mama Tree Grad Sophie Lizeray ( for creating this fun cartoon of me! Pretty much sums up what I love to do :-)

See you soon, and have a great spring + summer!

3 Tips on Emotional Detoxing for Mama + Baby
by  Christine Sferle, Transformational Counselor

Having a baby should be a time of joy, connection, partnership and peace -- both before and after your baby arrives. For many women, hormones, worries about the future, and the changes to your body, career, partnership and identity bring increased stress and an "in-your-face" awareness of the family dynamics and patterns that you may not want to repeat.
This can be a lot for a new mama to process. Thoughts, old stories and daily stress add up.  Emotions have a physical effect on your wellbeing, and that of your baby.
Here are 3 tips for letting go of old stories, stress and unprocessed emotions:
  • Emotions take up space. Like a cup filled with too much water, emotions that are not released begin to overflow -- impacting your wellbeing. For optimal emotional health, emotions need to be processed fully and let go.
Spring is the time to cleanse stuck energies and create vital space for new life to grow. And babies need a lot of space!
  • Letting go is the result of emotional detoxing, not the process. Many people confuse this because we hear so much about letting go of what doesn't serve us. This can leads to ignoring or avoiding what we are really feeling (aka spiritual bypass). Letting go is about making peace with your experiences -- both past and future, so that they no longer hold a charge.
  • Recognize that what you are feeling your baby feels too. Learn to communicate what you need and who you need it from so that you can feel at your best. Work through issues in your partnership or with your own parents before the baby comes.

3 Healthy Eatings Tips for Mamas + Little Ones from Flourish Foods!
  1. DO lightly use herbs and spices in baby, toddler and children's food!

Exposing younger kids to a variety of "adult" flavors can lead to more healthy adventurous eaters. Good to know: baby's palette is picking up flavors from what you eat early in pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
  2. DO add veggies in wherever possible!

Butternut squash mac n cheese? Spinach black bean brownies? Sweet Potato Muffins? Variety is key to get all the nutrients you and your family needs.
  3. DON'T think all fat is bad.
We love to add bone broth, grass-fed butter and nuts to our food to include healthy fats and nutrients that heal tired bodies. And don't forget to incorporate these healthy fats in your baby's diet when starting solids: it's their greatest source of energy and essential to brain growth and development.

Tip for Mams: Ask for Help When You Need it!
with Amy Iacopi, MPH, Patient Advocate & Owner at Iacopi Health Research

I first found myself thrown into the role of caregiver in my first pregnancy when my water broke at 33 weeks. My daughter was in the NICU for about 2 weeks and I never left her side. Taking care of myself AND my newborn (and learning to breastfeed!) was extremely challenging and exhausting. We could have easily used a professional advocate then to help us better understand all of the medical tests, specialists we were referred to and why, as well as to offer us additional emotional support during the stress of it all.

My advice to Mamas - ASK FOR HELP! Whether it's a professional patient advocate, postpartum doula, lactation consultant, your doctor, therapist, neighbor, or best friend - there are always people willing to help but they often don't know what to do. If someone offers assistance, don't be afraid to give them specific guidelines; for example, "Thank you for your offer to help our family. We would absolutely love a plate of lasagna if you could leave it on our doorstep tomorrow night."

I started Iacopi Health Research after my mother was diagnosed with an unusual subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The oncologists did a wonderful job taking care of my mother, but I noticed something missing: there was no one dedicated to addressing my mother's-or both my parents'-needs and concerns beyond the medical aspects of the cancer.

As a patient advocate and ally, I support you and your family logistically and
emotionally by acting as your medical research assistant. I will be your facilitator of communication with clinicians and family members, your referral specialist, hand holder, note taker, and so much more.

Labrinyth Walk: Thurs, June 15th
Mark your calendars for the 3rd Thursday
Starting at 11:45am at  Grace Cathedral
(1100 California Street @ Taylor in SF)

Join Jane Austin and the midwives of the Bay Area Homebirth Collective. We'll gather at 11:45 am and begin walking at noon as the bells start to ring. This is a time for quiet reflection, and a chance to put aside all the thoughts and chatter that busy our minds and distract us from connecting to our authentic selves.

Walking the labyrinth is an ideal way to actively meditate during pregnancy, and another step in preparing for birth.

Everyone is welcome to this FREE event.

Mamas Self Care Seminar

Two Hot Topics in 1 Day: "Self Care Tips to Revitalize Your Sex Life" + "Love & Money" at EHS

Stay tuned as Stephanie Forster, myself and Katie Cariffe have re-scheduled our next Mama's Self Care seminar for this fall at EHS Pilates in San Francisco! The first topic (SEX) was such a hit in March that we've decided to do our next one as a combo of both juicy topics we've been thinking about lately - SEX & MONEY.

We will move with a yoga and/or pilates class from 1:30 - 2:30pm before the seminar - space will be a bit more limited for the class (max: 15) than for the seminars (max: 40). Stay tuned --- we are finalizing the date now!
