A Note from our Executive Director

Dear friend,

“I never had the chance to meet candidates before. Thanks to your forum, I learned about the school board and I know who I am going to vote for.” – IVYP grandparent.

So much of the way I approach leadership is through listening. I try to hear the concerns of my staff, of our community, of our students, and of our partners. I hadn’t really considered what it meant to be disenfranchised until I began having conversations about our local elections. I quickly learned that my community had never heard directly from local elected officials. I can imagine many reasons for that – but I felt determined to engage our families in our local school board election. Every family in our children’s center and in our after-school program received a personal invitation from me, in English and Spanish, to participate. We partnered with Bridging Voices to ensure that there was seamless, simultaneous interpretation. We invited the candidates. And, then we hoped it would go well. And I'm so pleased with the result.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed during election time. Learning about and getting involved in local elections is one way to feel engaged, informed and effective. I am so proud that IVYP hosted our first ever candidate’s forum and that so many people attended who had never before participated in such an event. As an organization with deep roots in the Goleta Valley whose programs support families throughout the Goleta Union School District, we felt uniquely suited to host this forum. If you haven’t had a chance to hear from our local school board candidates, I invite you to watch our forum here.

No matter where you live, please vote!

IVYP's Annual Report

We are excited to share our annual report with you. We are incredibly proud of our accomplishments over the past year and grateful to our donors and supporters for helping us meet the needs of our community. I’d love to hear your thoughts and responses. Enjoy!

Study Desk Update

IVYP has received 96 desks requests! Our team has been busy processing these requests by contacting each family, assessing their needs in addition to the desks and arranging delivery of each desk. Thanks to the generosity of our community this work can continue and we can get more desks out to students who need them. If you or someone you know is in need of a study desk for a local student please fill out this form.

Trick or Treat!

This year's Halloween celebrations may look a little different this year. Here the City of Goleta is shares some fun alternatives to traditional trick or treating in line with the Santa Barbara County's Halloween recommendations.
  • Trunk or treating: Follow the safety practice guidelines. Park cars at least 8 to 10 feet apart from each Do not cluster in groups. If lines form, keep people at least 6 feet apart.
  • Car parades
  • Plan a socially distanced costume parade: Place treats where kids can pick them up along the parade route (daytime activity) or provide a bag of treats at the end.

Harvest of the Month

Each month we share a healthy, easy and affordable recipe to try that highlights ingredients you can get at our monthly food distribution on the first Thursday of every month. This month we are highlighting zucchini! Cooked zucchini is particularly high in vitamin A, though raw zucchini contains slightly less. Zucchini is also rich in water and fiber, two compounds which can promote healthy digestion. This recipe is a fun and delicious twist on a classic zucchini bread by adding a fall favorite - pumpkin!
