ABFM Seeks Educational Partners

In early August 2021, the ABFM will launch a pilot of its new National Journal Club. Participants will have 45 articles selected by a national committee of family physician experts on the basis of their relevance to family medicine, methodological rigor, and potential to change practice. All Diplomates and family medicine residents will be eligible to participate in this new service which can lead to earning points toward ABFM certification. Participants will choose which articles they are interested in and will be provided access to the full text article. They will then answer four questions on the study’s features, methodology and clinical applicability. After the questions are completed, participants will be offered a critique which puts the paper in context and recommends clinical direction.

ABFM is looking for partners who would be willing to develop innovative ways of teaching evidence-based medicine, using this product in their ongoing journal clubs, clerkships, group practice, primary care service lines or chapters. ABFM is sponsoring a competition to support educational innovation. The top 25 applications from across the country will receive $5,000.

A brief one to two-page proposal is required and due May 1, 2021, which describes practice setting and participants, the proposed educational intervention, and plans for evaluation and dissemination/sharing of learnings. Applications will be judged on the basis of innovation, scalability, evaluation plan and plans for dissemination. If there is demand, ABFM will work with partners to convene a virtual conference to showcase learnings and innovation.

Please send applications to Courtney Brown, cbrown@theabfm.org, by May 1, 2021. Funding will be flexible and can be used for any purpose related to the project, including conference travel, publication costs, or other methods of communicating results. Selected applicants must be able to provide the names and ABFM ID numbers of those participating in the pilot in order for them to have access to the articles. Please note that residents can participate, and most residents are already registered with ABFM for their in-training exam and other activities.
