Iowa-licensed physicians are required to complete 2 hours of Category 1 credits for chronic pain management and 2 hours of Category 1 credits for end-of-life care every five years. These requirements became effective August 17, 2011, are for physicians who provide primary care to patients (e.g., emergency physicians, family physicians, general practice physicians, internists, neurologists, pain medicine specialists, and psychiatrists.)

2023 Physician Business Leadership Certificate Program
Now Accepting Applications
IHA, the Iowa Medical Society, the Iowa Healthcare Collaborative, and the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians have come together again to launch the 2023 cohort of the Physician Business Leadership Certificate Program. The curriculum will again focus on these three domains:
  • Foundational Leadership Skills 
  • Equipping for Health Care Today 
  • Hot Topics for Providers 
 
Enhancements to the program include sessions on decision-making processes, learning the language of health care finance and developing tools to assist in the business side of health care, viewing health care from a social determinant or community health lens, and exploring strategic planning project tools and how they can assist quality initiatives. Participants also have the opportunity to take part in multiple post-event executive coaching options.
 
Drs. Laura Bowshier, Tom Marquardt, Tim McCoy, and Bryon Schaeffer, all past graduates, will once again serve as program faculty and provide context to connect the topics and issues to Iowa physician leaders.
 
The education session dates are:
  • February 7, presented in person at the Iowa Hospital Association.
  • March 7, presented virtually (optional DiSC assessment).
  • April 11, presented in person at the Iowa Hospital Association.
  • June 6, presented in person at the Iowa Hospital Association.
  • August 1, presented in person at the Iowa Medical Society.

CDC Foundation Podcast
IAFP member, Dr. Elizabeth Petelin, a third-year resident at MercyOne in Des Moines, was recently featured on a podcast with the President and CEO of the CDC Foundation, Dr. Judy Monroe. Dr. Monroe was attending the IAFP Annual Conference in October where she heard Dr. Petelin presenting an interesting case. Dr. Monroe asked Dr. Petelin to come on her podcast to share more about the case and how nutrition plays a role in healthcare.
