Eyelids Too Droopy, Turned in, or Turned Out: Medically Indicated Surgeries to Help Patients See and Feel Better

Objectives:
  • Participants will be able to evaluate the brows and eyelids and determine whether they are causing visual impairment.
  • Participants will be able to describe co-morbidities (such as chronic headache and dermatitis) associated with droopy brows (brow ptosis), droopy upper eyelids (eyelid ptosis), and excess upper eyelid skin (dermatochalasis).
  • Participants will be able to evaluate the lower eyelids and determine whether they are causing tearing, eye irritation, or eye redness.
  • Participants will be able to describe surgical approaches to correcting upper eyelid and brow malpositions, such as blepharoplasty, ptosis repair, and brow lifts.
  • Participants will be able to describe surgical approach to correcting lower eyelid malpositions, such as lower eyelid entropion or retraction repair.

What the Family Physician Needs to Know

Following this presentation, participants should be able to:
  • Identify basic forms of eye misalignment (strabismus) in children and adults
  • Identify common causes of strabismus in children and adults
  • Understand the vision-related and psychosocial-related reasons for treating strabismus in children and adults
  • Understand the medical and surgical options for treatment of strabismus in children and adults

An educational grant for this programming has been provided by Wolfe Eye Clinic. 
IAFP 2021 Legislative Coffee Canceled
Due to COVID-19, IAFP is unable to hold our annual legislative coffee. We encourage you to continue to reach out to lawmakers and advocate for family medicine. We will still provide weekly updates while in session so please check your email for important updates. We will also call on you from time to time to use the AAFP Speak Out feature to communicate concerns to your legislators on issues as they arise.

Physician Business Leadership
Certification Program
The Iowa Academy of Family Physicians is partnering with the Iowa Hospital Association, Iowa Medical Society and the Iowa Healthcare Collaborative on a program in its third year to provide Physician Business Leadership training to physicians in Iowa. Participants in this program will gain tools to become successful leaders in today’s complex health care environment.
 
There are five virtual sessions scheduled between February 23 and August 11 along with additional requirements of pre and post-work, including assessments. Please review the brochure for details about the program, expectations of participation, course work and registration.

Scholarships are available. Apply HERE by January 29th.
