Mark your calendars to join us for our 2026 IAFP Legislative Breakfast. The breakfast will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2026 from 7:30-9:00 a.m. at the State Capitol building (located on East 12th and Grand Avenue in Des Moines) in the Rotunda. This is a casual/social event that offers the opportunity to meet legislators and discuss important healthcare legislation. To be eligible, you must be an active IAFP member who lives or works in one of the following Iowa counties:

Allamakee, Benton, Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Clayton, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Howard, Iowa, Jackson, Jones, Linn, Marshall, Mitchell, Poweshiek, Tama, Winneshiek, or Worth.

New Physician Director

To be eligible, you must be an active IAFP member who has been in practice for less than seven years.

• Review 60 core competency questions with experienced family physician faculty, and decide the best answer with your colleagues.
• The IAFP reports your answers directly to the ABFM on your behalf.

National Radon Action Month

Resources for Healthcare Professionals

Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States behind smoking. It’s estimated that 1 in 15 homes across the country have high levels of radon. Radon is colorless, odorless, tasteless and does not present any immediate symptoms. The only way to detect radon in your home is to test for it. A nationwide survey found that while healthcare professionals believe they should assess patients for IAP exposure, most are not satisfied with their knowledge of its health effects. In fact, radon was ranked the indoor air pollutant that healthcare professionals felt the least familiar with.  

This National Radon Action Month, the American Lung Association has developed tools to help healthcare professionals identify, screen and treat patients for exposure to radon and other IAPs:  

• IAQ Resource Hub – toolkits with resources to address common indoor air pollutants including the Radon Reduction Toolkit for Healthcare Professionals with videos, handouts, peer-to-peer education and a decision support tool.  
• Indoor Air Quality Action Plan – plan to help patients take action towards improving the air in their home, including a section on radon.   
• Invisible Risks: The Health Impacts of Indoor Air Quality – FREE online learning module, including a module on radon (CMEs available!)  
• Iowa Radon Rack Card – attached; available for order FREE of charge (limit of 50 rack cards; while supplies last). Interested physicians can order by emailing Alexis.Gigliello@lung.org.
