We are India Association of Minnesota
A Message from the IAM Past President
The Story of IAM’s Government Relations & Civic Engagement Committee
Who we are
India Association of Minnesota (IAM) is a non-partisan, community-serving nonprofit representing Minnesota’s diverse Indian diaspora. We build bridges with civic leaders, encourage voter participation, and engage on public-safety and community issues that affect Asian Indians across the state.
How it started
-
1988–1992: IAM’s civic journey grew from our long-standing representation on the Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans (CAPM). In 1988, Governor Rudy Perpich appointed Sudhansu Misra (1987 India Club president) to CAPM; he served as CAPM president in 1989 and continued through 1992, strengthening our community’s voice at the Capitol.
-
2014: IAM formally launched the Government Relations Committee.
-
2016: Past IAM President Shanti Shah (1992), the Committee’s first chair, clarified its mission: deepen relationships with elected officials and increase civic participation within Minnesota’s Asian Indian community.
Signature moments
-
IndiaFest at the Capitol: Over the years, bipartisan leaders—including State and U.S. Representatives and Senators and Minnesota’s Governor—have joined our flag-raising ceremony, spotlighting Indian culture and community contributions.
-
Recognizing India Day (2021): Beginning in 2020, Shanti Shah worked with Representative Ginny Klevorn (Plymouth) to draft a bill recognizing India Day as part of IndiaFest. The bill passed the House, then—championed by Senators Eric Pratt and Mary Kiffmeyer—cleared the Senate and was signed into law by Governor Tim Walz in summer 2021.
-
This was the first such recognition by any U.S. state.
-
Each year, the Governor issues a proclamation declaring August 15 as India Day in Minnesota, which is read at the IndiaFest flag-raising celebrating both the U.S. and Indian flags.
What we do today
-
Civic participation: Encourage our community to complete the census and vote in school board, local, state, and national elections.
-
Public safety & belonging: Host dialogues with local police departments on Asian hate, discrimination, and targeted burglaries, promoting awareness, prevention, and partnership.
-
Year-round engagement: Strengthen relationships with policymakers to ensure Minnesota’s Asian Indian community is seen, heard, and included.
Leadership
The Government Relations & Civic Engagement Committee was led by Sreeni Checka (2020) for a few years and is currently co-led by IAM board members Shruti Joshi and Sanjay Terakanambi, who continue to expand IAM’s reach and impact.
How you can help
- Register and vote.
-
Show up: Join IndiaFest, flag-raising events, and public-safety forums.
-
Volunteer: Lend your time and expertise to IAM’s civic initiatives.
Together, we listen, learn, and lead—building a stronger Minnesota for all.

Painted Poetry: Art of the Rajput Courts
Rajput paintings evoke many moods and senses. They tell stories about the beliefs, desires, myths, poetry, and power that shaped the royal Rajput courts of northern India during the 16th to 19th centuries. Rajput artists chose subject matter that was meant to engage all of our senses (taste, touch, smell, sound, and sight) and elicit emotional responses—an aesthetic experience known as rasa. Love, laughter, fury, compassion, disgust, horror, heroism, wonder, and tranquility are the nine rasas of Indian aesthetics and offer one way to interpret Rajput paintings.

KATHA DANCE THEATRE
ANNOUNCES LOCAL PREMIERE OF "NATURE'S REVENGE"
Katha Dance Theatre is excited to present the Minnesota premiere of Prakritir Pratisodh – Nature’s Revenge! at The O’Shaughnessy at St. Catherine University this November. The evening-length performance, which premiered earlier this year in Appleton, WI, was originally shown as a work-in-progress at the Cowles Center’s Fall Forward Festival in 2023.
Nature’s Revenge portrays through Kathak dance a series of vignettes depicting what happens when human actions drive the five basic elements (or “Panchabhuta” – earth, water, fire, air, and space – which in Indian philosophy and Ayurveda are considered the fundamental building blocks of the universe and the human body) out of sync, and how we can work together to bring them back into harmony. It shows how we all benefit when we foster a relationship of mutual respect with the earth.
Featuring new and expanded choreography by KDT Artistic Director Rita Mustaphi and music composed by Pandit Birju Maharaj, Sarat Srivastav, Rajeev Chakraborty and Jayanta Banerjee, the show is in keeping with KDT’s mission to propel the Kathak tradition into genre-bending spaces, including social justice and climate change advocacy. The work-in-progress version was named by the Minnesota Star Tribune as one of the 10 most memorable dance performances of 2023.
WHAT: Prakritir Pratisodh – Nature’s Revenge!

Halloween
Friday, October 31, 2025
Halloween's significance lies in its layered history, blending ancient Celtic "Samhain" traditions with Christian observances and evolving into the modern, secular celebration of costumes, candy, and scares known today. Originally, it marked the end of the harvest and a liminal time when the living and dead could interact, a concept later formalized as All Saints' Eve and All Souls' Day. Today, it provides a unique opportunity to acknowledge the darker aspects of life, engage in harmless fun, and foster community through shared festive activities like trick-or-treating and parties.
IAM wishes everyone a happy and safe Halloween.
Watch for those ghosts and goblins, princesses and super heroes as they trick or treat.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
