IAM Annual NonViolence/Gandhi Remembrance Day

Friday, October 2, 2026

How do we teach our kids that real strength isn't about winning an argument—it's about standing up for justice without violence?

This October 2nd, India Association of Minnesota (IAM) brings two extraordinary global and local visionaries to the Minnesota History Center to speak directly with our youth, parents, and community:

⚖️ Justice Alan Page – Local icon, former MN Supreme Court Justice, NFL Hall of Famer, and champion for educational equity.

🌟 Kailash Satyarthi – 2014 Nobel Peace Laureate who liberated 130,000+ exploited children worldwide.

🎙️ Moderated by Fred de Sam Lazaro – Director of the Under-Told Stories Project (PBS NewsHour).

Together, they’ll show the next generation that real courage lies in non-violent action, service, and moral integrity.

Message for Young Girls

by Rashmy Nair & Rashmi Jindani

Being named 2025 Mrs Universe Petite USA taught me that no matter our size, shape, or background, we can achieve any dream we set our minds to.

I was bullied for my height and weight and told I didn’t fit the mold. I faced countless rejections—from modeling auditions to ad castings—but I refused to let “no” define me. I broke stereotypes, kept smiling, and continued moving forward with passion and resilience.

My journey—from the pageant stage to balancing work, business, creative ventures, and motherhood—has taught me that you don’t have to look a certain way to belong. I want every girl to see that confidence, talent, and perseverance can open doors.

Your voice, quirks, and journey are uniquely yours. Be fiercely and unapologetically yourself. Own your story, step forward with courage, and take your place in the world. Your dreams are non-negotiable, and your light deserves to shine.

Believe. Lift. Lead.

Wearing the Elite Ms. Minnesota Petite USA 2026 crown and sash represents much more than a title to me—it represents confidence, purpose, and the courage to believe in yourself.

My message to the next generation is simple: Know your worth. Believe in your potential, embrace what makes you unique, and never let anyone limit your dreams.

True confidence comes from character, kindness, and embracing the passions that make us who we are. Celebrate your differences, step outside your comfort zone, use your voice, and pursue your dreams with courage.

Leadership isn’t about having a title; it’s about lifting others, bringing people together, and using your strengths to make a positive impact.

To every young girl who dreams of wearing a crown someday, remember: a crown may sparkle, but your true shine comes from your character, kindness, confidence, and purpose. Believe in yourself, embrace your uniqueness, lift others, and lead with purpose.

A University of Minnesota research team is recruiting young people for an advisory board.

Researchers at the University of Minnesota (UMN) are looking to work with young people to provide guidance on the development of a technology-enhanced medication support program using tools such as text reminders, apps, and virtual check-ins to support young people with type 2 diabetes take their diabetes medication as prescribed.

The advisory board will provide input by offering feedback, sharing ideas and perspectives, and helping researchers better understand youth experiences to improve the well-being of young people.

Who can apply?

Individuals who:

  • Are between 14 and 20 years old
  • Have had a type 2 diabetes diagnosis for at least 3 months
  • Are currently on medication or a treatment regimen for diabetes (this can include an oral medication, such as pills, or an injectable medication, such as insulin or a GLP-1)
  • Are comfortable speaking and understanding English
  • Are available for virtual meetings on weekday evenings or weekend mornings

Youth under 18 years old will need parent or guardian consent to participate.

All participants will receive $75 for each session they attend. The first five sessions are required. The expectation is to attend at least 8 in total. To apply Click Here

Kalinga: Feast of the Fallen

A dark dance drama of war, hunger, horror, and victory.

Inspired by the 12th-century Tamil literary work Kalingathu Parani written by poet Jayamkondar, Kalinga: Feast of the Fallen reimagines an ancient victory poem through contemporary dance-theatre.

After the Chola army defeats Kalinga, Goddess Kali and her starving ghouls descend upon the battlefield and transform its horrors into a grotesque celebration. Bodies become decoration, weapons become tools, and the remnants of war become an elaborate feast. Through narration, movement, rhythm, dark humor, and moments of Tamil language, the ghouls revel in victory—until the words used to describe an ancient conquest begin to sound unsettlingly familiar.

Voices Under the Banyan Tree

A Helping Heart

In the very early days of SEWA-AIFW’s founding in 2004, a group of volunteers felt the pressing need to protect women in the community, and took the initiative to implement the Gender Based Violence program. Twenty plus years later, the program is a core part of SEWA’s services, and many of the offerings that came after: driver’s permit tests on site; meal delivery assistance; and transportation, evolved from this essential work.

Today’s story highlights SEWA’s positive contributions to these families.

Dipankar Mukherjee, Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Pangea World Theater, described the significance of Raj Chaudhary’s initiative: “SEWA provides a space where silencing is not an option anymore. There is a shared imagination, a vision, and a mission, that one day we will create a world and a space where women are safe.”
