IAM eNewsletter
Spring 2022
From The Executive Director
Elizabeth Willson Moss
Dear Friends,

First, I want to give a veritable bear-hug of thanks to You and everyone who donated to Interfaith Assistance Ministry with financial gifts and grants in 2021. Your financial support provided the lifeline that has allowed IAM to keep thriving and supporting our community’s mounting needs for crisis assistance. Your care and compassion provided food, assisted with housing and utility bills, kept neighbors properly clothed, and more - during a time when the need was greatly exacerbated by the last two years of the pandemic.

Because of your generosity, IAM was able to provide crisis services touches to more than 43,000 children and adults, many of them multiple times. Those service touches represent a 63 percent increase in individuals served compared to 2020. Thank you for helping our own; thousands of residents living at and beneath the poverty line, surviving by God’s grace.

Now, time to celebrate!

After more than three years of planning, applying for grants, hiring, collecting resale items, navigating permits and supply chain delays during COVID, IAM’s new thrift store officially opened March 1st! It is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. We will hope you will come shop and make donations of quality clothing, jewelry, household goods, furniture and other items to our thrift store.

A big shout out goes to our excellent contractors at Cooper Construction, led by Trey Ford, who have helped us navigate new waters time and again; to the Perry Rudnick Fund at Henderson County Community Foundation, which helped pay for the thrift store’s construction with a $50,000 grant; to a long-time beloved volunteer for his naming sponsorship; and to Bank of America, which provided a thrift store grant of $50,000. The Bank of America grant was awarded because IAM was named its Western North Carolina nonprofit Neighborhood Champion of the Year in 2021. It was the first time BoA has given a Henderson County nonprofit that honor!

Why is the IAM Thrift Store such a big deal for us? For the first time in our 37 year history, IAM will generate an ongoing revenue stream from the thrift store sales. This new revenue source will be an important addition to the generous donations and gifts from individuals, corporate and civic groups, and our local faith communities and allow us to meet the ever-growing need in Henderson County. Every penny the thrift store raises will help fund IAM’s services and operations.

As much as we are hopeful that our Thrift Store will help us meet the growing needs of our neighbors, many of whom have been severely impacted by COVID, we still need your unrestricted financial donations to IAM. This time of year is always a time of year when we see our financial donations drop significantly. We pray you will make a donation to help us during the low giving months as we continue our I Am IAM giving campaign this year!

Blessings,
Our Thrift Store is Open!
Our new IAM Thrift Store is now a reality!

We are excited to welcome Kathy Yaw(center) to our team as Thrift Store Manager. Kathy comes to us with 11 years of retail experience with Belk's Hendersonville store. "I love retail and I love thrift stores," says Kathy.

Kathy, Assistant Store Managers Cindy Thorpe(left) and Angela Vaughn(right), and driver Bill Thomas look forward to helping customers find great deals. "We want it to be a really fun place to shop," says Kathy. She is also excited about the store’s potential to advance IAM’s mission. "I love that IAM helps the community in so many different ways and that it gives people a chance to get out of difficult situations in their lives."

IAM’s Thrift Store will be stocked with uncommon and upscale treasures and friendly, helpful staff and volunteers. Shoppers will enjoy that ‘thrill of the hunt’ experience while knowing the joy of giving back to our local neighbors who are hurting. By shopping with IAM, you will help feed hungry children and adults, help prevent new homelessness, keep the heat and lights on and provide clothing and shoes and jackets for children whose parents cannot afford larger sizes as their little ones grow.

Our IAM Thrift Store will offer repurposing demonstrations to show you how to turn thrift store finds into something useful or decorative. In addition, we will offer a daily game to give shoppers even deeper discounts and sales!

To keep up with what’s going on at IAM’s thrift store, go to www.iam-hc.org/thrift-store and subscribe to our IAM Thrift Store newsletter. Look for surprise coupons in those emails, too!

We invite everyone to our Grand Opening celebration and ribbon cutting, on April 22 and 23rd. Stay tuned for details and thank you for shopping at the IAM Thrift Store.

Congratulations, Karol Murray!
IAM welcomes Karol Murray (left) as our new Chief Operating Officer. Karol has been serving as our Food Assistance Manager for the past several months and is excited to expand her role with IAM. Karol will oversee our Food Assistance and Clothing Assistance programs, head up IAM’s IT operations, and be in charge of overseeing IAM’s vehicles and facilities.

Karol has personally been through challenges in her life that give her a unique perspective on the needs of our neighbors—and a heart for helping. “I’ve wanted to make my life more meaningful by giving back to others. Our work brings joy to the people we help, and that just fills me up.”

Karol replaces Wally Moneyhun (right) who has been instrumental in many improvements to our operation over the course of the past two years—including implementing our highly successful Drive-Thru Tuesday events and organizing our pantry to meet the increase in demand as a result of the pandemic. “I’ve worked for a lot of nonprofits in my life and IAM, without a doubt, has one of the best teams of staff and volunteers that I’ve worked with,” says Wally.

Fortunately, Wally will not be stepping away for good and we look forward to continuing to see him as a volunteer for IAM. Thank you for everything, Wally!
A Family's Story of Hope
It is easy to get caught up in the numbers at a place as busy as IAM. But, behind every number is a real person facing a very real, and often heartbreaking, crisis.

In February, our Social Services Department was able to help a 37-year-old mother with six children put together the deposit necessary to get her family into a rental home offered by Hendersonville Affordable Housing Corporation. The family had been homeless for several months and were referred to IAM by a school social worker.

The family’s new home has several bedrooms and will provide the stability and safety necessary for a young family to create a better life. Thanks to IAM’s many donors and our incredible staff and volunteers, this family has a dramatically improved chance of building a successful and productive life in Henderson County.
We Need Volunteers!
IAM currently has volunteer openings in our pantry, clothing closet and our Thrift Store. Our volunteers usually work a 4-hour shift at least one day a week and our standard shifts are 8:30-12:30 and 12:30-4:30.

Please call 828.697.7029 to inquire about volunteer opportunities and learn more about IAM.
Many donors to IAM are opting to make convenient recurring donations online. With our online giving option, you can set the donation amount and the frequency of your gift - monthly, quarterly, etc.

IAM's Impact in 2021
Last year was the most challenging year IAM has faced since our founding in 1984. Demand for our services reached unprecedented levels with more than 43,000 service touches during 2021 – a 63% increase over 2020.

In every service category offered by IAM, we saw dramatic increases in requests for assistance with basic needs. Fortunately, your incredible generosity and compassion made it possible for IAM to make it through 2021 stronger and more ready to respond to our community's growing needs.

Thank you for all you do to make our mission possible!
