A Facilitator's Guide to Remote and Socially
Distanced SEL Instruction in Out-of-School Time

While social-emotional learning (SEL) is always an important part of children's development, during difficult and uncertain times it's particularly critical for youth to understand their emotions, have empathy for others, ask for help when they need it, and create positive relationships.
Fortunately, SEL, youth development, remote learning, and continuous improvement are topics that have been studied and practiced for decades. Lessons from this work can help OST facilitators take a clear-eyed approach to supporting youth and their communities during the pandemic.
Using research- and practice-based perspectives, the National Afterschool Association has identified six priorities for OST facilitators.

Back to School: The Approach Congress Should Support
Few issues cut deeper among parents, educators, and the country than schools reopening. Experts warn that this fall, nearly 24 million workers with children between the ages of six and 14 will have no at-home child care option. Jodi Grant - Executive Director at the Afterschool Alliance - writes that there is a solution: Out-of-school-time programs can step in, not just during the times when schools are traditionally closed, but during the times they will be closed due to an altered schedule.

Your STEM Program

The Indiana Afterschool Network is partnering with Magnify Learning to provide an exciting and FREE professional development series - Jump Start Your STEM Program. This dynamic, virtual professional development will combine interactive webinars with independent online sessions to help you design a high-quality and engaging STEM program. Participants will:
- Leave with a standards-based project ready to implement and the processes/structures to create future projects
- Receive training, feedback and insight from project-based learning (PBL) certified trainers
- Leave with tools that will allow them to share information with additional staff, in order to maximize impact
- Receive 18.5 hours of professional development aligned with Child and Youth Care competencies
- Connect with a cohort of STEM programs around the state

Applications open through August 31
United Way of Central Indiana would serve as the administrator of the Nonprofit Restart program for all 501(c)(3) organizations in Marion County. With $2 million in Coronavirus Relief Funding, the Nonprofit Restart program will provide necessary reimbursements for organizations procuring safety-related items that are essential to preventing the spread of COVID-19, in keeping with CDC guidelines and helping nonprofits continue serving people as safely as possible. Nonprofit organizations can receive grants between $200-$5,000 to reimburse themselves for the cost of personal protective equipment (PPE), disinfectant products, and capital improvements based on CDC guidelines.
Deadline: September 1, 2020
The Kiwanis Foundation of Indianapolis provides annual grants in the amount of up to $2,500 for programs that serve children and youth in the City of Indianapolis that are designed to improve the quality of life directly through activities promoting health, education, etc. and through programs that encourage leadership and service among youth.
Indiana school districts now have an opportunity to provide all of their Elementary through High schools a robotics team by applying for a Robotics Start-Up Grant through TechPoint Foundation for Youth’s (TPF4Y) State Robotics Initiative. Robotics training will be available to all awarded educators and will include training and information on VEX robotics kits, competition logistics, expectations for robotics educators and how educators can integrate Project Lead the Way activities (for elementary only) into the classroom with the new robotics kit. Recipients of the grant will be expected to assemble a robotics team at their school and attend at least one robotics competition during the school year.
