IAPMO Concludes 95th Annual Education and Business Conference

IAPMO, a global team of experts engaging industry and government for a safer built environment, last week conducted its 95th annual Education and Business Conference at the Planet Hollywood Las Vegas Resort and Casino. The event was co-located with ARCSA International’s Annual Conference.

 

Steve Panelli, chief plumbing inspector, city and county of San Francisco, and Jeremy Stettler, coordinator/inspector, Davis School District, Clearfield, Utah, were elected to second terms as president and vice president, respectively. Brian Hamner, plumbing inspector, city of Des Moines, Iowa, will return as secretary/treasurer. Eric Gilbreath, senior plumbing inspector for Public Health Seattle and King County, and Brad Elliott, combination plans examiner, city of Las Vegas, were elected as district directors, and Jeremy Diaz, UA Local 78 business manager, Rick Garcia, senior mechanical inspector, city of San Diego, and David Ledda, senior plumbing inspector, city and county of San Francisco, will return to the Board of Directors.

Making an Impact Through Water and Sanitation Initiatives Around the World

Since I last wrote, the IWSH team has completed three projects, two in North America and one international. With the help from our incredible volunteers, partners, and sponsors, we were able to change lives.



Lowndes County, Alabama: Upskilling Youth to Support Community Plumbing Improvements

For the third consecutive year, in April 2024, IWSH returned to the heart of Lowndes County, Alabama, for an IWSH Community Plumbing Challenge to drive change in a region that has suffered from inadequate sanitation for decades. Our focus has now expanded to providing further training and empowerment alongside indoor plumbing retrofits. In collaboration with the Black Belt Unincorporated Wastewater Program (BBUWP), we are equipping local high school students with the skills needed to conduct the IWSH Household Plumbing Survey, an easy-to-use tool that identifies where skilled plumbers need to make repairs and update fittings, fixtures, and appliances.

IAPMO has announced the formation of a Young Professionals Committee, a breakthrough initiative designed to attract and empower the next generation of plumbing and mechanical industry leaders.


The IAPMO Young Professionals Committee will act as an idea lab for connecting with a broader set of emerging industry leaders. Committee members will collaborate with IAPMO experts to infuse the industry with fresh perspectives, ideas, and feedback that can shape actionable insights that matter. The Young Professionals Committee is designed as a collaborative between seasoned industry experts and emerging talent, ensuring that the evolving needs of the industry are addressed with sustained impact.

IAPMO has proudly published a new white paper titled Adaptive Reuse: Converting Offices to Multi-Residential Family, a comprehensive analysis of the transformative approach to addressing housing shortages through the conversion of office spaces into residential units.


Authored by Christoph Lohr, P.E., CPD, LEED AP BD+C, ASSE 12080, vice president of IAPMO Technical Services and Research, the white paper delves into the challenges and opportunities presented by adaptive reuse projects. The Golden State is officially in on IAPMO’s Water Demand Calculator®. On July 1, California made Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC®) Appendix M — the Water


Demand Calculator available for statewide use on a voluntary basis.


In accordance with the move, IAPMO Vice President of Technical Services and Research Christoph Lohr, P.E., hosted a webinar with Gary Klein, president of Gary Klein and Associates, that covered the benefits of using the Water Demand Calculator to size plumbing in homes and apartment buildings.

IAPMO Codes and Standards Corner

Recapping IAPMO’s Uniform Plumbing and Mechanical Codes Technical Committee Meetings

IAPMO recently completed Technical Committee Meetings toward the development of the 2027 editions of the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC®) and Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC®), which will update the 2024 UPC and UMC, American National Standards governing the installation and maintenance of plumbing and mechanical systems nationwide. During their May 5-10 meetings in San Diego, the UPC committee acted on 371 proposals and generated one committee proposal. The UMC committee acted on 316 proposals and generated one committee proposal. The meeting monograph for these meetings can be obtained from the IAPMO Codes website.

IAPMO, Pace to Publish UMC Chapter 17 as Standalone Document for Geothermal Energy Systems and Ambient Temperature Loops (ATL)

IAPMO and the Pace Energy and Climate Center at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University (Pace) have agreed to jointly publish Chapter 17 of the Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC®) as a standalone document (IAPMO/UMC/Chapter 17-2024) to address the needs for enforceable safety provisions for geothermal district ambient temperature loop systems. Pace advised IAPMO on the development of this document.
