This satellite is dedicated to Charles S. Lieber, who was a pioneer in the field of alcohol-induced liver and gastrointestinal diseases. Dr. Lieber has been a clinical investigator, physician and passionate academic teacher. Dr. Lieber’s groundbreaking contributions to the field of alcohol-induced liver damage is unique by introducing the cytochrome P450 2E1. He was a devoted clinician as well as mastering research areas including hepatic cirrhosis and fibrosis. His outstanding contribution in clinical research is unparalleled. He treated patients for 50 years.
The symposium will address the following: mechanisms and biomarkers of alcohol-induced damage to different organs, as well as the role of other substances of misuse in this dialogue. Participants will learn about the relationship between alcohol intake in several chronic diseases, in the presence or absence of COVID-19 and viruses, as well as the interactions of alcohol with medications and drugs of misuse. Conversely, participants will also learn about alcohol consumption on metabolic diseases. Please contact Manuela Neuman for details.
