What a journey!

From 2015 and my first participation to the IATDMCT congress in Rotterdam, to September 2025 when I had the immense privilege of becoming the president-elect of the IATDMCT: what a journey it was! It has been a travel mixing learning a lot in therapeutic drug monitoring while being progressively, but rather rapidly, welcomed as a member of the IATDMCT family-like community. Because, this is what strikes you the most when you enter the IATDMCT: the kindness of the members, the support you can have whenever you have a poster or a communication and the constant backing that you can have in every initiative you take within the association.

A long-standing member of IATDMCT once told me: “You will get more reward from the IATDMCT than you will ever have locally or nationally”. And it was true. Besides being an incredible group of people with whom you will increase your knowledge in pharmacology and toxicology, study innovative strategies to individualize drug treatment, you will meet wonderful human beings, happy to help you grow within the community.

From a young pharmacologist attending his first big event and meeting with some of his professional role models—Teun Van Gelder, Anders Åsberg, Pierre Marquet, Michael Oellerich, Loralie Langman, Dario Cattaneo… with some of them who became friends of mine now—to a less young but still passionate member of the IATDMCT council, first as a secretary and now as a President-Elect, it was an incredible 10-year run!

Now, I would like to give back a little bit of what I got from the IATDMCT.

We want you to feel connected to all the other members of the IATDMCT through our annual congress but also now with the IATDMCT sections, the webinars and activities organized by the scientific committees and also virtually with the compass and the more recently IATDMCT podcast we created together with Jana Stojanova.

Moreover, I want to disseminate the family-like spirit outside of the society, attract new members to precision medicine development, increase the level of evidence of TDM and CT for the benefit of patients, reinforce the position of pharmacologists, pharmacists, scientists experts in TDM and CT among healthcare professionals, while keeping the fun atmosphere we had during our meetings in such locations as Kyoto, Foz do Iguaçu, Oslo or Singapore. I am eager to see all of you, young members, having the same amazing journey I had thank to the IATDMCT!

Brief Biography:
Hong Zhou is a clinical pharmacist at Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Her research focuses on individualized therapy for heart transplant patients and gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). She has been a member of the IATDMCT since 2021 and actively follows the society's developments. She is the Deputy Chairman of the Youth Committee of the TDM Committee in China and Member of the Youth Committee of the Clinical Toxicology Committee of the Chinese Society of Toxicology. She actively contributes to advancing TDM and precision dosing in clinical practice.

Current Focus or Projects:
She currently serves as a contributing expert in the development of Therapeutic drug monitoring of biologics in inflammatory bowel disease: An evidence-based multidisciplinary guideline, which has been successfully published and provides key references for TDM practice. She also leads a clinical and mechanistic research project focusing on imatinib-related cutaneous adverse reactions, aiming to elucidate their underlying mechanisms and improve medication safety.

Contribution to IATDMCT:
I am honored to have been appointed to the YSC of IATDMCT in 2025. Since joining, I have actively contributed to committee activities—including participation in regular meetings and undertaking key responsibilities such as peer review of abstract submissions. At the 2025 IATDMCT Annual Conference in Singapore, I delivered two oral presentations and presented one poster. I regularly read IATDMCT’s official publications, including *Compass* and *e-News*, and curate and disseminate relevant scientific content through the Chinese TDM Youth Committee’s official newsletter to support knowledge exchange within our national community.

Project Comfort: Learn More About the Consortium Around Home-Sampling and a Call To Action for IATDMCT Members

Project-COMFORT; towards full implementation of home-sampling.

Micro-sampling and home blood collection are now technically feasible for accurate measurement of biomarkers and to support drug monitoring. A survey about the perception and experience of blood tests is now being circulated. The outcome will be used to create an open knowledge hub for future researchers to support rapid uptake of home-sampling into decentralised clinical studies and healthcare.

The Call for Nominations is open until April 30, 2026. The award presentation will take place at the Opening Ceremony of the 24th IATDMCT Congress in Rennes.

Nominations from members must be accompanied by curriculum vitae including a list of publications and a letter of support from the nominator containing an evaluation and appraisal of the nominee for the award. Additional letters of support from members of the Association or other respected scientists are welcomed as supporting information for the Selection Committee.

At the 2026 IATDMCT Congress in Rennes, the venue for the 2030 Congress will be chosen.

Members interested in submitting a proposal to host the Congress must submit an application by July 31, 2026. The purpose of this application is to provide guidance for candidates and to facilitate the task of selecting the final site, for the Site Selection Committee. You may choose to submit the information required on the application form in a different format, but all questions on the form should be addressed. Very often a tourism office, conference centre, or hotel in the region can help you gather the information.

Tuberculosis remains one of the world's most persistent infectious diseases, and despite decades of available treatments, achieving cure remains a long and winding road. The challenge isn't just the disease itself – there is also a notable difference in how patients respond to TB drugs. From the early bactericidal activity in the first two weeks to managing drug-resistant strains, TDM offers a path to optimising treatment while minimising toxicity. Yet significant barriers remain, particularly in the low- and middle-income countries where TB burden is highest. We are joined by Thi Nguyen and Marieke Sturkenboom to discuss the topic.

IATDMCT Congress 2026 – Rennes, France, September 27 – 30

The Chair of the Regional Section, Professor Vanessa Steenkamp, is Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning and Full Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. Her research focuses on traditional herbal medicine and toxicology, particularly in pre-clinical drug development, with specialization in neurodegenerative diseases and cancer.

The Vice-Chair, Associate Professor Seth Kwabena Amponsah, is an Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Dean of the School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho, Ghana. His research interests include clinical pharmacology, with a focus on infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship, prudent use of antimicrobials, therapeutic drug monitoring, and the clinical efficacy of antimicrobial agents.

The Secretary, Assistant Professor Sana Boujaafar, is a Clinical Pharmacologist with experience in pharmacology and therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM), focusing on anti-infective and immunosuppressive drugs.

The Events Coordinator, Dr. Sean Currin, is a Chemical Pathologist based in Johannesburg, South Africa, jointly employed by the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) and the University of the Witwatersrand, and currently practising at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital. He oversees mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography testing, with a particular focus on therapeutic drug monitoring.

The Section is currently identifying members to serve as country leads, who will encourage both early-career and established colleagues within their respective countries to join the IATDMCT.

Pharmacometrics, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning in Precision Dosing and Clinical Toxicology

Call for Papers

Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) invites submissions for a Special Issue focused on the integration of pharmacometrics, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) to advance precision dosing, therapeutic drug monitoring, and clinical toxicology. This Special Issue aims to showcase cutting-edge research, innovative methodologies, and clinically impactful applications that enhance individualized pharmacotherapy and decision-making through quantitative and computational approaches.

Aims & Scope

This Special Issue seeks high-quality contributions that explore the intersection of:

• Pharmacometrics: Population PK/PD modelling, PBPK, QSP, disease modeling, Bayesian forecasting, model-informed precision dosing.
• Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning: Predictive modelling, deep learning methods, digital twins, reinforcement learning for dose optimization.
• Precision Dosing, TDM, & Clinical Toxicology: Data-driven dose adjustment, TDM-guided strategies, toxicity prediction models, integration of real-world data, and safety signal detection.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

• Model-based strategies to optimize dosing across diverse populations
• AI/ML algorithms for dose prediction and toxicity risk assessment in clinical practice
• Integration of therapeutic drug monitoring with machine learning-guided clinical decision support
• Predictive models addressing rare adverse events and out-of-range drug exposures
• Computational tools for real-time feedback on dose adjustments and toxicity mitigation
• Comparative evaluations of statistical/pharmacometric approaches vs AI/ML predictive methods
• Clinical case studies demonstrating meaningful impact on patient outcomes

Submissions that emphasize clinical translation, methodological innovation, reproducible workflows, and the potential to influence clinical practice are particularly encouraged.

We welcome submissions of Review Articles, Opinion Papers, Original Articles, Short Communications, Grand Rounds/Case Studies, and Letters to the Editor.
