Questions from the community
Has the PA system been fixed?
CPS engineers visited the school on Thursday, February 9th and our PA system is operational. The quality varies throughout the building so CPS will be providing additional information for larger system upgrades. We will continue to provide regular updates on this.
How did the school work with CPD during the event on Tuesday, February 7th?
CPD provided the first point of notification of the incident. From that moment, CPD was on scene along with members of the CPS Office of Safety and Security to ensure the safety of students and staff. CPD provided support through the dismissal process.
Is there any update for families who did not receive the emergency Robocall?
Robocalls are sent by the Central Office in case of an emergency. As a parent or caregiver, especially if you did not receive the call last week, we encourage you to please ensure that the school has your updated emergency contact information. Here is a link to the Emergency Form and hard copies are also available at the Security Desk.
Tubman plans to do a test of the emergency Robocall system in the coming weeks; additional information will be provided on when to expect the test call. We are also working with CPS technology support to determine a reason why many did not receive last week's call. We are also investigating a text option for emergency notification and will share information as soon we have.
Why did Chicago Police Department Officers visit the school last Friday, February 10th?
CPD officers spoke to students and answered questions after the incident on Tuesday, February 7th; this is standard procedure from CPS and CPD after such incidents. Going forward, we will take steps to explicitly provide an opportunity for parents to opt-out in the event that there are any such assemblies in the future
Is Tubman planning any upcoming lockdown drills?
All Tubman and Right at School staff received a review of the Emergency Management Plan last Thursday, February 9th to ensure all are aware and clear on the Evacuation, Lockdown, Shelter in Place, Severe weather and All Clear (ELSA) codes and procedures
Families and caregivers will be informed in advance of any student lockdown drills.
What are the different types of lockdowns?
Hard lockdown: Used in the event of an immediate threat on campus and requires the school to go into an internal emergency procedure.
Soft lockdown: Used to respond to a possible threat in the surrounding area (e.g., law enforcement activity in the neighborhood) and generally allows classroom instruction to continue.
Had the PA system been fully operational on Tuesday, February 7th, the school could have been put into a soft lockdown when the threat was determined by CPD to be outside of the building. Without a centralized way to share information, details about the ongoing situation reached teachers and staff at differing points in time during our lockdown which we know was incredibly unfortunate.
