Questions for Frank Battisti?
One of the sessions that I am most looking forward to at our upcoming conference is “Beliefs, Objectives, Strategies: Teaching Music Through the Band,” a conversation with the legendary Frank Battisti. Along with Mitch Lutch, his former student and the former Director of Bands and Central College in Pella, Dr. Battisti will be telling stories and answering questions about his time as both a public school and collegiate band director.
In preparation for this session, Dr. Battisti has asked that we collect questions from our members ahead of time so that he can be sure to address them during his presentation. If you have a specific question that you would like to ask Dr. Battisti, or if there is something you would like him to specifically address, please click on the survey link below.

We invite you to share your perspective in this quick form regarding music education practices in our region born from teaching during COVID-19. Within new parameters, educators have explored innovative uses of technology, student-centered approaches within a large ensemble setting, new ways of presenting music achievement other than concert performance, and much more. Additionally, there are aspects of teaching or leading a music program pre-COVID that you may consider leaving behind.
We would like to hear from you! Please take a moment to reflect on your responses to these questions, and consider joining us as we share a summary of the responses to this survey at the Iowa Fine Arts Education Summit to be held virtually on Thursday, June 17.
Don't worry, your responses will remain anonymous as we share our findings.
Have a question or want to meet virtually to chat? Feel free to email Dan at dblack@cbcsd.org or Elmer at eellefson@cbcsd.org anytime!

Spring is finally here! Temperatures are rising, trees are budding, and the baseball season has begun! As the calendar turns from March to April and May, I hope you can finally see a light at the end of the long, dark tunnel. This has been a very difficult year for me, as I suspect it has been for you. But as more people are vaccinated, the hope of a return to near-normalcy continues to grow. So as summer draws closer, take a moment to breathe. Take a moment to enjoy the weather. And perhaps most importantly, take a moment to enjoy the people with whom you spend your days. We’ve all gone through a hard year and we’ve done it together. It’s important both to recognize the struggle and celebrate the fortitude and community that has allowed us to weather it. We may not quite be there yet, but we’re going to make it!
I’m excited for you to experience our 94th annual conference. Please make sure to go to bandmasters.org to register today. I know it’s going to be a valuable experience for you. As always, thanks for everything that you do for the band students in Iowa. Your students are lucky to have you!
See you online in May.
