Notes from IBDEA Headquarters

How can it already be December? It seems like yesterday we were counting (1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8) in Orlando, and now we are less than three months to our 2023 Conference in New Orleans.

Speaking of the 2023 Conference, join us February 23-27 at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside. Our Conference planning team has been busy with last-minute details. If you are planning on being there, book your hotel room ASAP!

A few housekeeping reminders. If you still need to pay your 2023 membership dues, please do so by December 31, 2022. If you need help paying your membership dues, please email info@ibdea.org.

IBDEA Headquarters will be closed for the holidays as follows, and we appreciate your patience during this time:
  • December 22 - December 26
  • December 29 - January 2

Also, registration is open for the 2023 IBDEAU schools. Carbonation 101 and Draught Beverage Dispense have limited attendance, allowing for ample hands-on training with industry leaders.

We wish you all a wonderful holiday season. See you in 2023!

Word of Mouth to Words on a Screen
By Max Spread, Scholle IPN, max.spread@scholleipn.com

Many face-to-face customer service contacts take place via an app or online. These mobile or online interactions are becoming more commonplace daily, from conference calls to Zoom; checking in to a hotel for a digital key; ordering your favorite caffeinated beverage, or even a quick bite to eat. Face-to-face interactions have been limited for several reasons. Starting in early 2020, some brands and companies migrated customer support to a digital format. With those changes going from face-to-face to “finger to the smartphone,” how do we (as consumers, business owners, or customers) provide feedback when that transaction is finished?

As we’re presented with more digital interactions in our daily lives, how do we provide a thank you when a process is smooth? Or, on the other side of the coin, how do we interact with that organization when the process doesn’t go well?  We continue to migrate to digital connections, which somehow feel that we are moving from word of mouth to words on a screen.

As a frequent traveler, I consult reviews on platforms like Google reviews, Yelp, or even some social media platforms to find a good local restaurant to entertain customers, friends, and colleagues. As with a review about a restaurant, reviews on a retail company or potential supplier partner can carry influence when preparing to make a purchasing decision.

With any online format, reviews should be approached with care. It’s helpful to consider a company's entire ranking or rating and find the average of the few or hundreds of reviews. In many instances, reviews help identify a good place for a dinner meeting; however, some can be unnecessarily negative. I try to provide feedback as often as possible, respond to a survey after making a phone call, and leave a Google review or Yelp rating after a meal.

How do we weigh the positive or negative reviews? How important are they in your common interactions?  Are there instances when you have decided to do business with a company based on online reviews? Is there an instance when you have decided not to do business with a company based on online reviews? For some small businesses, online reviews could bolster their business and provide a potential patron or customer the nudge they need to make that purchase. How do you handle vocalizing constructive criticism in online reviews?

Do you review products and services online?
ALWAYS positive/negative 🫤
Only POSITIVE 😁
Only NEGATIVE 😡
It depends on my mood 🤔
