PARISHIONERS of the MONTH

Jim and Kathy Meersman became parishioners at Immaculate Conception when they moved from Racine, WI to Flat Rock 20 years ago. “Jim wanted to find a place to retire where he could golf the entire year,” Kathy explains, “and I wanted to be able to do other things.” The Hendersonville area met both their wishes. Jim got involved as a volunteer at Interfaith Assistance Ministry within their first year here. “I was an intake volunteer and then on the IAM Board,” he says. “I’ve done appeal weekends for IAM here at Immaculate Conception, and been on the Taste of Hendersonville Fundraising Committee for 10 years.” Together he and Kathy have held the “Souper Bowl of Caring” soup collection at Immaculate Conception for the past 15 years which benefits IAM. A former Catholic school teacher, “Back when having 36 in your class was normal,” Kathy remembers, she then became a Director of Religious Education for nearly 50 years. “I was a DRE in 5 states,” she says. “Jim got transferred every 3 years or so with International Harvester (now Case IH), and we were off to a different state. Luckily there was always a parish looking for a DRE.” Here at Immaculate Conception, Kathy has been a catechist in grades 4-8, and the second grade Faith Formation catechist for the past 5 years. “I love working with the children as they get ready to make their First Communion,” she says with a smile. “They are so excited and eager to learn, and they come up with the cutest answers!” Kathy chairs the Parish Welcoming Committee, contributes to the newsletter, and is a volunteer receptionist at the St. Joseph’s Center. She also reads to the blind 3 days a week for MARRS, the Mountain Area Regional Reading Service. Jim is a 4 th Degree Knight and serves as the Faith Director for our parish Knights of Columbus. They have 4 children “who all live in a different state,” Kathy laughs. “We spend our vacations going to see them and our 9 grandchildren in NY, MN, AR, and SC!”

Meet Rev. Mr. Sigfrido Della Valle Deacon in Residence

I was born in Central America, El Salvador in 1963, and I have been in this wonderful nation since 1980. I have been married to Sonia for 37 years and have three daughters, three grandchildren, and one on the way. I was ordained a deacon to the Diocese of Charlotte on May 31, 2014. My first assignment was to Immaculata Conception Catholic Church in Forest City, where I served for three years. I served at St. Joan of Arc in Candler for two years, and currently am helping at Immaculate Conception in Hendersonville, NC. I am also helping Father Julio Dominguez with the Hispanic Ministry in the Diocese. I am an entrepreneur and currently a licensed general contractor in NC., specializing in tiny houses of 400 square feet or less. My wife and I enjoy traveling around the world, and have done The Way of Santiago pilgrimage on foot twice, once from France and once from Portugal. We are looking forward to doing the French route again in September on a bicycle, since my knees are in bad shape. I also enjoy flying and mountain biking. I am looking forward to serving the community at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hendersonville where I have been welcomed by the pastor and feel at home.

New Lenten Retreat at Clare's Sanctuary

Clare's Sanctuary Retreat House announces registration for the new Lenten retreat entitled - "Can You Drink the Cup I Drink..." (Mk 10:38). Through the varied gospels, we will journey with key participants in Jesus' Passion - in order to help us discern our own personal response to Jesus' most challenging question! Metanoia: A Journey with Christ into Conversion

Beginning the first week of Lent, Immaculate Conception parishioners will begin a five week journey together based on the study of Metanoia, a video series developed by Fr. Dave Pivonka, TOR. We will be given the opportunity to meet in large and small groups. Meetings will be held at Church or in the Cenacle. Those who are unable to attend any of these meetings are encouraged to experience the Metanoia series as families or as individuals at home. The Metanoia program consists of a 30 minute engaging video presentation followed by an opportunity to share experiences in small group settings. The videos will guide us into a more profound understanding of Jesus’ deep and abiding love and his call to conversion and are available free at https://thewildgooseisloose.com/metanoia . A Study Guide is also available to download. Through captivating stories and beautiful cinematography, the series, filmed on location in the Holy Land, leads viewers on an inspirational journey of grace, hope, repentance, and transformation. The Greek word metanoia means conversion but also to change, to repent, to turn, and to think differently. Fr. Pivonka says that “this series invites us to a deeper and more profound conversion—a metanoia—that moves us from something to someone, as metanoia ultimately turns us to Jesus.” Make plans now to attend one of these several opportunities to experience Metanoia this Lent. Crossing Bridges During These 40 Days of Lent

Lent is that time of the Church year when we are challenged to look within ourselves at our own failings and weaknesses in order to put them behind us, and experience new growth and life – to seek conversion – to change the way we see things and the way we act. We are challenged to cross the bridge from our current way of life to one of greater holiness. There’s an interesting expression about bridges from the Orient: “Those who cannot forgive others break the bridge over which they themselves must pass.” As we continue our Lenten journey this month, what bridges of forgiveness do we need to cross to gain the joy of Easter? Have we left an argument with a spouse or friend unsettled? Have we refused to say, “I’m sorry,” or “I forgive you,” to a family member or neighbor? Have we harbored anger or resentment toward someone without forgiving and letting it go? Each time we ignore or refuse to pardon one another, we are actually breaking apart bit by bit, the bridge of reconciliation that we too must cross to reach eternal life with Christ, the model of forgiveness and mercy. Each time we truly forgive someone, we strengthen the bridge over which we must cross with our heavy baggage of failings and sin. As stewards of God’s Kingdom on earth, Lent is the perfect time to reflect on our lives, and mend those cracks in our bridge to holiness, or if need be, to begin to rebuild what our anger, hatred, or resentment has destroyed. Remember the words which Christ gave us in the Our Father, “…and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” Let us use this Lent to reinforce our bridge from this life to our heavenly life with God.

Vietnam Veterans Visit ICS Middle School

Three (3) veterans came to Immaculata Middle School to share their stories with the students, as part of their healing process. They are members of the Creative Writing Program at Charles George VA Hospital in Asheville. These gentleman are part of the group that presented at Flat Rock Playhouse on Feb 9th to support Blue Ridge Honor Flight (BRHF). Marybeth Burns presented information to the students about BRHF.  Our students will be writing letters to present to those on the May 6th flight as a Welcome Home. A very moving and spiritual sharing - you could hear a pin drop!

Faith and Money Matters

GOOD SAMARITAN ATTIC

There are a large number of families in Henderson County in need of furniture and household items for basic living needs. Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Grace Lutheran Church have a Covenant Agreement for a ministry program to provide used  furniture and household items at no cost to those in need. The Good Samaritan Attic is located on Buncombe Street next to Immaculata School. Over the past year we have provided over 433 families with everything from tables, chairs, couches, beds, mattresses, bedding, pots, pans, dishes and much more. Your generosity makes it possible for this ministry to help so many in need. If you are moving or downsizing and would like to donate furniture or household items, please contact Margaret Cavagnaro at (828)280-1298 for pick up. We also offer receipts for tax purposes, if needed.

LENTEN RETREAT CHALLENGES MEN TO "BECOME EUCHARIST"

Catholic author, speaker, and founder of Broken Door Ministries, Brian Pusateri, will offer a Lenten Men’s Retreat on March 21, 2020. The retreat, “ BECOMING EUCHARIST,” helps participants gain a deeper understanding of the Eucharist itself so that they can become Eucharist. Pope Benedict XVI in his Exhortation SACRAMENTUM CARITATIS said, “Each of us is truly called, together with Jesus, to be bread broken for the life of the world.” A recent survey published in CRUX online on August 9, 2019, indicated that two thirds of Catholics don’t believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. During this retreat Brian will guide attendees to the fact that “The Eucharist is ‘the source and summit’ of the Christian life” (Catechism of the Catholic Church). The retreat will begin with 9:00 am Mass in the main church, followed by coffee and donuts in the St. Francis Room before the talks begin promptly at 10:15. The retreat will end at approximately 2:00 pm. There is no charge for the retreat but men are asked to register by emailing Chuck Tokarski at kocretreat2020@gmail.com. The retreat is sponsored by the Immaculate Conception Knights of Columbus Council #7184. LENT BEGINS RICE BOWL PROGRAM

For the 45 th year, the Catholic Relief Services will hold its Lenten Rice Bowl Collection in parishes across the U.S. Catholic Relief Services (CRS) challenges Catholics to put their faith into action through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Young and old alike are encouraged to change the lives of the poor and give them hope by filling the cardboard rice bowls with loose change or cash. The money (75%) is used for humanitarian efforts in roughly 45 countries and 25% stays in our local diocese to support hunger and poverty programs. Each Rice Bowl comes with a Lenten calendar that guides families through the 40 days of Lent with activities, reflections, stories, and recipes from some of the different families and countries supported by CRS. Rice bowls will be distributed to youth in Immaculata School and all Faith Formation programs and will be available in the church narthex and by the chapel for parishioners to take home.

Knights of Columbus Honor Deb & Dave Huber

The Immaculate Conception Knights of Columbus selected Deb and Dave Huber as Family of the Month for their thoughtful and generous donation to their council. Deb’s father, Leon Van Wassenhove, took out a K of C life insurance policy in 1942 at the age of 18. After her father’s death, Deb and Dave donated the proceeds ($1,359.51) of the policy to the council. The funds will be used in honor of Leon for some project that has not been budgeted.

Jim y Kathy Meersman se convirtieron en feligreses de la Inmaculada Concepcion cuando se mudaron de Racine, WI a Flat Rock, hace 20 años. CRUCE DE PUENTES DURANTE ESTOS 40 DÍAS DE LA CUARESMA

La Cuaresma es la época del año de la Iglesia en la que tenemos el desafío de mirar dentro de nosotros mismos nuestros propios defectos y debilidades para dejarlos atrás y experimentar un nuevo crecimiento en la vida, para buscar la conversión, para cambiar la forma en que vemos las cosas y la forma en que actuamos. Tenemos el desafío de cruzar el puente desde nuestro estilo de vida actual hacia uno de mayor santidad. Hay una expresión interesante sobre los puentes de Oriente: "Aquellos que no pueden perdonar a otros rompen el puente sobre el que ellos mismos deben pasar". A medida que continuamos nuestro viaje de Cuaresma este mes, ¿qué puentes de perdón debemos cruzar para obtener la alegría de ¿Pascua de Resurrección? ¿Hemos dejado una discusión con un cónyuge o amigo sin resolver? ¿Nos hemos negado a decir "lo siento" o "te perdono" a un familiar o vecino? ¿Hemos albergado enojo o resentimiento hacia alguien sin perdonar y dejarlo ir? Cada vez que ignoramos o nos negamos a perdonarnos, en realidad nos estamos rompiendo poco a poco, el puente de reconciliación que nosotros también debemos cruzar para alcanzar la vida eterna con Cristo, el modelo del perdón y la misericordia. Cada vez que realmente perdonamos a alguien, fortalecemos el puente sobre el cual debemos cruzar con nuestro pesado equipaje de fallas y pecados. Como administradores del Reino de Dios en la tierra, la Cuaresma es el momento perfecto para reflexionar sobre nuestras vidas y reparar esas grietas en nuestro puente hacia la santidad, o si es necesario, para comenzar a reconstruir lo que nuestra ira, odio o resentimiento ha destruido. Recuerda las palabras que Cristo nos dio en el Padre Nuestro, "... y perdónanos nuestras ofensas como también nosotros perdonamos a los que nos ofenden". Usemos esta Cuaresma para reforzar nuestro puente de esta vida a nuestra vida celestial con Dios.

Veteranos de Vietnam visitan ICS Middle School

Tres veteranos visitaron la escuela y compartieron sus experiencias como parte de su proceso curativo. Ellos son miembros del Programa Escritura Creativas en Charles George VA Hospital en Asheville. Estos caballeros son parte de un grupo que presentará una obra en Flat Rock Playhouse el 9 de febrero para apoyar los Vuelos de Honor Blue Ridge. Marybeth Burns informó a los alumnos sobre los Vuelos de Honor Blue Ridge (BRHF). EL ÁTICO DEL BUEN SAMARITANO

Hay una gran cantidad de familias en el Condado de Henderson que necesitan muebles y artículos para el hogar, como prioridades básicas en su vida. La Iglesia Católica de la Inmaculada Concepción y la Iglesia Luterana Grace tienen un Acuerdo de Pacto para un programa ministerial para proporcionar muebles usados y artículos para el hogar sin costo alguno para los necesitados. RETIRO DE CUARESMA  DESAFÍA A LOS HOMBRES a "CONVERTIRSE EN EUCARISTÍA"

El autor católico, orador y fundador de Broken Door Ministries, Brian Pusateri, ofrecerá un retiro de hombres cuaresmales el 21 de marzo de 2020. El retiro, "CONVERTIRSE EN EUCARISTÍA ", ayuda a los participantes a obtener una comprensión más profunda de la Eucaristía, para que puedan convertirse en Eucaristía. Papa Benedicto XVI en su exhortaciónSACRAMENTUM CARITATIS dijo: "Cada uno de nosotros está verdaderamente llamado, junto con Jesús, para ser pan partido para la vida del mundo ". Una encuesta reciente publicada en CRUX en línea el 9 de agosto de 2019 indicó que dos tercios de los católicos no creen en la presencia real de Cristo en la Eucaristía. Durante este retiro, Brian guiará a los asistentes al hecho de que “La Eucaristía es "La fuente y la cumbre" de la vida cristiana "(Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica). El retiro comenzará con la misa de las 9:00 am en la iglesia principal, seguida de café y donas en la sala de San Francisco antes de que las conversaciones comiencen a las 10:15. EL PROGRAMA DE ARROZ COMIENZA CON LA CUARESMA

Por 45 años, Catholic Relief Services llevará a cabo su Colección Cuaresma Rice Bowl en las parroquias de los Estados Unidos. Catholic Relief Services (CRS) desafía a los católicos a poner su fe en acción a través de la oración, el ayuno y la ofrenda. Se anima tanto a jóvenes como a mayores a que cambien la vida de los pobres y les den esperanzas al llenar las tazas de arroz de cartón con monedas sueltas o efectivo. El dinero (75%) se utiliza para esfuerzos humanitarios en aproximadamente 45 países y el 25% se queda en nuestra diócesis local para apoyar los programas de hambre y pobreza. Cada Taza de Rice viene con un calendario de Cuaresma que guía a las familias a través de los 40 días de Cuaresma con actividades, reflexiones, historias y recetas de algunas de las diferentes familias y países respaldados por CRS. Se distribuirán Tazas de arroz a los jóvenes en la Escuela Inmaculada y en todos los programas de Formación de Fe y estarán disponibles en el templo de la iglesia y en la capilla para que los feligreses se lleven a casa.

Los Caballeros de Colón honran a Deb y Dave Huber

La Inmaculada Concepción Caballeros de Colón seleccionó a Deb y Dave Huber como Familia del Mes por su donación reflexiva y generosa a su consejo. El padre de Deb, Leon Van Wassenhove, sacó una póliza de seguro de vida K of C en 1942 a la edad de 18 años. Después de la muerte de su padre, Deb y Dave donaron las ganancias ($ 1359.51) de la póliza al consejo. Los fondos se utilizarán en honor a León para algún proyecto que no se haya presupuestado.
