Meals for the Hungry - 10/18

As a parish, we serve dinner to ~150-200 people on the third Saturday of every month. We ask that food donations be delivered in disposable (ie, aluminum) pans and that each donation be enough to feed 15 people. Donations can be dropped off at the Immaculata kitchen (attached to the school) between 4:15 and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Food will be kept warm and cold as necessary until transport to Urban Ministry on Liberty Street, where meals will be served in person. We ask that those who volunteer to serve at Urban Ministries arrive at Immaculata kitchen by 5 pm; an insufficient number of servers puts a burden on those serving. Thank you for your generosity and kindness.

Traffic Advisory – This Sunday

Please be aware that a Half Marathon will be taking place this Sunday, and South Buchanan Blvd will be closed for the event.

If you normally travel that route to Mass, we kindly ask that you plan ahead and use an alternate route to avoid delays.

29th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today's theme is perseverance - Moses keeping his hands upraised throughout the battle. Paul urging Timothy to stay with the task of preaching and teaching, and the widow appealing to the corrupt judge. To be faithful stewards of God's gifts, we too must preserve in the roles which we are called.

Ministry Spotlight of the Week

Would you like to engage your spiritual gifts* of encouragement, hospitality, caregiving, or service? Why not consider becoming part of our Bereavement Ministry?

You may be wondering—what does the Bereavement Ministry do? When there is a funeral in the parish, we provide a reception for the family after the service. You can sign up to bring a food item for the reception, or come help with setup, serving, or cleanup.

We will also be hosting a reception this year following the Memorial Mass on November 1st.

Second Collection: World Mission Sunday

Jesus was a missionary. As the Word of God, he is the light of all nations. As the Word made flesh, he brought God's own life into our midst. Before returning to the Father, he sent the Church to continue the mission given him by the Father and empowered her with his Spirit: "As the Father has sent me, so I send you" (Jn 20:21). Thank you for continuing Jesus' mission this World Mission Sunday.

Catholic Daughters Book Club

Catholic Daughters of the Americas – Court Durham will have our CDA Book Club discussion on Tuesday, October 21, 2025 at 6:15 p.m. in the Youth Room at IC in the Olive Tree Building. Mary Hilchey will lead our discussion on West with Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge. Please bring an appetizer to share with the group in lieu of dinner. Gun Violence Healing & Support Circles

(Compassionate Sharing Circles)

Compassionate Sharing Circles are being formed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The purpose of these circles is to allow the survivors of gun violence, loved ones of victims of gun violence, and others affected by gun violence to tell their stories through a non-judgmental process.

Our hope is that our Circle will help generate effective and sustainable protection outcomes for the victim(s). This is done through listening and strengthening support. Local community resources may be helpful as well.

Our first Circle meeting will take place on Friday, October 24, 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Office Adult Faith Formation Room (901 West Chapel Hill Street). “Sacred Listening”

Fall 2025 JPIC Faith Formation Presentation:

On Tuesday, October 28, 7-8:30 p.m., in the Youth Ministry Room 2222, Immaculata School, Ken Chiha, Director of Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) will offer our JPIC Faith Formation Fall Presentation on “Sacred Listening.” Light refreshments will be provided. All members of our Immaculate Conception parish and the Immaculata School community are invited to attend!

World Food Day Prayer & Action to End Hunger

Bread for the World is asking all Immaculate Conception parishioners to take part in World Food Day on October 16th, with prayer and action to end hunger.

Like the persistent widow in the Bible (Luke 18:1-8), we must continue asking Congress to fully fund and strengthen the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and reinstate global nutrition and health programs to feed and care for people around the world.

Durham CAN Delegates Assembly

The Durham CAN Delegates Assembly with candidates for Mayor and City Council will be held on Sunday, October 19th, 3 p.m. at St. Mark AME Zion Church (531 S. Roxboro Street).

Immaculate Conception Catholic Church is a founding member of Durham CAN (Congregations, Associations, and Neighborhoods). This summer, four Durham CAN Research and Action Teams have been working on strategies around Affordable Housing, Immigrant Rights, Violence Reduction, and Education. Candidates will be asked to respond to Durham CAN’s agenda for change in the areas of increased funding for immigrant legal protections, youth summer jobs, a comprehensive plan to reduce gun violence, and affordable housing at 505 West Main. Please plan to attend and support our efforts to make Durham a safer and more equitable city.

Evening of Sacred Music

You are invited to an evening of beautiful sacred music in thanksgiving for those we hold in blessed memory. The organist is the acclaimed recitalist Chad Fothergill, Organist, Duke University Chapel. The program will last about one hour and fifteen minutes and will feature music appropriate to All Saints Sunday, November 2. It begins at 7 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Durham. We hope you can share this time of renewal.

50 Plus group

The 50 Plus group meets on the first Wednesday of each month at the Hibachi Grill buffet restaurant at 12:30 PM. Next meeting date is Wednesday, 11/5/2025. Please plan to arrive between 11:30 - 12:00 to eat lunch before the meeting starts. We have a speaker, followed by discussion of upcoming trips and other events. There are currently openings for the 3 day, 2 night New Years Eve inSavannah, GA, trip from Dec. 30, 2025 - Jan. 1, 2026, and the trip to Washington, D.
