NEW RESEARCH

PURE: Payments with UWB RElay-protection by Daniele Coppola (ETH Zurich), Giovanni Camurati (ETH Zurich), Claudio Anliker (ETH Zurich), Xenia Hofmeier (ETH Zurich), Patrick Shaller (ETH Zurich), David Basin (ETH Zurich), Srdjan Capkun (ETH Zurich):

  • The authors address the vulnerability of contactless payments to relay attacks and introduce PURE, a novel relay protection mechanism utilizing Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) radios. PURE integrates seamlessly with existing EMV payment protocols, effectively preventing sophisticated physical layer attacks without requiring backend modifications. It offers robust relay protection with sub-meter accuracy and minimal execution delay (41 ms). The security of PURE within Mastercard’s EMV protocol was also verified using the Tamarin prover.
