Celebrating the Conclusion of
Out and About Uptown's Coast
|
|
In total, ICA partnered with 18 local experts across nine sessions that collectively drew in 219 participants. Each session topic highlighted a unique connection to the coastal zone, including Historic Preservation, Mental Wellness, Green Infrastructure, and more. The multidisciplinary sessions featured local experts sharing historical and present-day content expertise on the session topic during ‘classroom’ time, followed by an experiential learning component such as a guided coastal tour. One highlight of the series was surveying participants to track their understanding of various coastal issues. Most notably, participants reported increased understanding of ways to provide stewardship to the coast.
To complete the project, ICA staff produced a toolkit on the process used to design and implement the series, that include outlines of process of curating topics and partnerships, educational content shared by partners, insights from survey data, and more. The hope for the toolkit is to enable others to be able to create transformational education series tailored for the communities they work with.

Did you know that all our
Technology of Participation (ToP)
facilitation courses have moved to a new pricing system? Course fees are now tiered depending on the participant’s organization type, making ToP training more accessible to students, small nonprofits, and community groups.
ICA's ToP Trainers offer over 13 different facilitation courses in states all across the United States. ToP Training continues to grow and develop, so ICA encourages even those familiar with our methods to revisit our course offerings. See a list of our courses
here, and find offerings by location

ICA Chile colleagues at their weekly meeting

ICA Taiwan staff and colleagues gathering

ICA organizations around the globe continue to push forward transformational change in their locales. ICA-USA staff member Seva Gandhi was recently able to visit ICA Chile and ICA Taiwan.
ICA Chile is currently a volunteer-run organization that offers training and leadership development to individuals with physical disabilities, and the organizations that advocate for them. ICA Chile colleagues meet weekly and discuss ongoing work as well as opportunities for future engagement. ICA Chile colleagues are excited about positive social changes currently underway in Chile, and the role ICA can play in shepherding them forward.
ICA Taiwan
is comprised of staff and colleagues that offer training and facilitation services to organizational and community initiatives throughout Taiwan. ICA Taiwan is currently most looking forward to
ICAI Asia Pacific Regional Conference, which
they are hosting from
Saturday,
November 10th through Sunday, November 18, 2018.
The pre-conference will feature site visits to community projects around Taiwan, and interchange with those working on the projects.

Colleagues convened at the ICA GreenRise from
Sunday, April 22nd through Saturday, April 28th for the
Spring 2018 Sojourn. The week of work focused on six major areas: 1) Global Archives website; 2) Imaginal Education; 3) Social Process; 4) Other World; 5) sifting through the basement; 6) organizing AV record and archive space. The three content area working groups—Imaginal Education, Social Process, and Other World—provided recommendations that informed the structure of the new Global Archives website. The website, basement, and AV/archive space teams all made progress on effectively processing and storing the wealth of information available to them. More complete reports, including video, can be found on the
Global Archives website.
All are invited to attend the
Fall 2018 Sojourn at the ICA GreenRise from
Sunday, October 21st through Saturday, October 27th. For more information, please reach out to Jean Long, a member of the Archives team, at

"This isn’t just a regular building, because there are so many ways in which we give back, but people can’t see that from outside. So seeing people come in and realize that is amazing."

How did you find the ICA?
I had been here before for the play, “My Soul Cries Out”. I was invited by Kamela Bryant and Lesley Showers. That’s how I heard about ICA. Later, Lesley mentioned she had an opportunity available that i might be interested in, which is how I landed here. That was last September.
What is your role?
My official role is reception, which means my unofficial roles are security, counseling, mentoring, and motivational help. I give the clients who use our building encouragement and tips on places to stay or how to find jobs. When I started I knew a little that this wouldn’t be an ordinary receptionist job, but not like I know now. People recognize me on the street now, and it’s cool being so friendly with everybody. I’d say I have relationships with most of the people who pass through the building. I know their names, faces, and schedules. We have a rapport.
What is your favorite thing about the ICA?
Oh wow… I’d have to say it’s the view of everything that I have sitting at the front desk. This isn’t just a regular building, because there are so many ways in which we give back, but people can’t see that from outside. So seeing people come in and realize that is amazing. I volunteered for the Open House tour and saw so many people come in and ask questions about the building. I was honored to be able to talk about all the good things that happen here. Which is my other favorite part of working here: touching the lives of so many people. I’ve been homeless before, so I really relate to our clients, and do whatever I can to support them—cheering them on, giving away some of my furniture—it’s what we’re supposed to do. It bothers me when I can’t give, when I can’t help.
What is an interesting fact about you?
I have such a big heart! I’m always looking for ways to help people. If I could give one piece of advice, it would be: don’t be a taker; always look for opportunities to give back.
