Why Be Accredited?
Kay Sackville Breuer
Vice President, Greater Burlington Partnership
The United States Chamber of Commerce recently awarded our chamber, the Burlington/West Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce, a division of the Greater Burlington Partnership, with 5-Star Accreditation for its sound policies, effective organizational procedures, and positive impact on the community.
This is a prestigious honor earned by staff, board members, and volunteers. The fact that we are the only 5-Star Chamber of Commerce in Iowa and among the top 1% of chambers nationwide speaks to the relevance of the organization.
Accreditation with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the only program of its kind that defines excellence in chamber planning and recognizes chambers for outstanding contributions in their communities. The purpose of the U.S. Chamber's Accreditation Program is to facilitate continuing excellence in the chamber industry and to foster a pro-business environment.
In order to receive Accreditation, a chamber must meet minimum standards in their operations and programs, including areas of governance, government affairs, communications, finance, human resources, government relations and technology.
Going through the process takes work and it's not an easy task.  However, the benefits that we have seen over the years have raised the bar for our chamber.  Our programs, policies and practices have been thought out, tested and make an impact in the progress of our community.
Accreditation validates a chamber as having programs that benefit their local economy and for positively influencing action in their community.  Local chambers are rated Accredited, 3-Stars, 4-Stars, or 5-Stars. The final determination is made by the Accrediting Board, a committee of U.S. Chamber board members.
I encourage you to look into the process and take your chamber to the next level.  For more information you can visit www.uschamber.com/members/chambers/accreditation
