Understanding ICE Requests at the Sonoma County Jail

At the June CAC meeting, Lt. Brent Kidder shared ICE-related data provided by the ICE Coordinator within the Sheriff’s Office. This information offers important insight into how ICE interactions occur—and don’t occur—within local custody operations.

May 2025 ICE Statistics:

37 requests for release notifications from ICE
16 requests for custody or release information
3 responses were sent
0 arrests occurred

Lt. Kidder emphasized that the Sheriff’s Office does not initiate contact with ICE. When someone is taken into custody, they are fingerprinted as part of the standard booking process. Those fingerprints are sent to the FBI and California Department of Justice, and it is through those biometric systems that ICE may be notified—not by any local reporting from the Sheriff’s Office.

This clarification helps address ongoing community questions about how federal immigration enforcement connects with our local jail system.

Welcome Chief Deputy Michael Soto to IOLERO!

We’re excited to welcome Chief Deputy Michael Soto to the IOLERO team!

Michael brings a deep commitment to public service, transparency, and accountability.

He earned his law degree from U.C. Law San Francisco and previously served as a Deputy Public Defender in Los Angeles and Orange counties. Most recently, he worked as a Police Special Investigator for the Los Angeles Police Commission’s Office of the Inspector General, helping oversee LAPD practices from a civilian perspective.

His expertise will be instrumental in supporting IOLERO’s mission and strengthening public trust across Sonoma County.

Welcome Michael Miller, CAC Representative for District 4

We’re pleased to welcome Michael Miller as the newest member of the Community Advisory Council, appointed Sonoma County’s District 4.

Michael brings a broad perspective to the role, with deep roots in public service and civil litigation. A former police officer turned attorney, Michael has tried over 70 jury cases and co-founded one of the largest law firms north of the Golden Gate Bridge. His personal and professional journey includes lived experiences with law enforcement from both sides—and a lifelong dedication to justice, equity, and mentorship.

He currently volunteers with youth as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) and has been part of a weekly equity-focused community group since 2020.
