Diwali - Festival of Lights

On behalf of the Interfaith Council of Sacramento, During this celebration of Diwali, we wish everyone celebrating this auspicious day, joy and peace!  

Diwali is a “festival of lights” that celebrates the triumph of light over dark and good over evil, and the blessings of victory, freedom, and enlightenment. The name comes from Sanksrit dipavali, meaning “row of lights.” On the night of Diwali, celebrants light dozens of candles and clay lamps, placing them throughout their homes and in the streets to light up the dark night. In most of India, Diwali consists of a five-day celebration that peaks on the third day with the main celebration of Diwali. In other places where Diwali occurs, usually only the main day is celebrated.Diwali is primarily celebrated by followers of the Hindu, Sikh, and Jain faiths. However, the holiday is celebrated throughout India, Singapore, and several other South Asian countries as a national holiday, meaning that people outside these religions may participate in Diwali celebrations, too. Hindu, Sikh, and Jain communities in the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, and elsewhere around the globe also regularly celebrate Diwali.  

Because Diwali is celebrated by so many people worldwide, traditions are diverse, though there are a few common themes, including the lighting of candles and the gathering of families.Diwali takes place on the day of the new Moon, when the sky is at its darkest, so a big part of the celebration involves light. Candles, clay lamps, and oil lanterns are lit and placed throughout the home, in the streets, in areas of worship, and floated on lakes and rivers. Fireworks are also set off on the night of Diwali—said by some to ward off evil spirits.

YCA: Youth Challenge Award Sacramento

citiesRISE is mobilizing action to improve mental health for and with young people in Sacramento by launching a Youth Challenge Award to support emerging young leaders and youth-focused organizations to take action in Sacramento to support community mental health. We are looking for socially entrepreneurial initiatives that are largely devised and implemented by youth (age 15-35) that address key dimensions of a paradigm shift around mental health, including:

Our goal is to reach 1 billion young people by 2030 to turn the tide on depression, addiction and suicide through evidence-based interventions and community experience.

Car Seat

To receive a free car seat, participants need to attend the full 2 hour class and show proof of eligibility such as receiving aid from public assistance, their WIC folder, Medi-Cal cards, EBT cards, to show they are receiving assistance. If they have multiple kids, they will need to show medical cards for each or have them present to receive seats for each child. I am a member of Arden Arcade HART (Homeless Assistance Resource Team) and I would like to invite you to our Open House. 

Arden Arcade HART is a nonprofit organization comprised of religious communities, businesses, and residents of Arden Arcade. Our mission is to provide resources to assist community members experiencing homelessness. 

There are currently eight official HARTs in the Sacramento Area; including Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova, Citrus Heights, Folsom, Carmichael, Arden Arcade, North Sacramento, and Midtown (South Sacramento HART is in the process).
