In 2004, the United States Congress designated April as National Financial Literacy Month in recognition of the empowerment gained through financial education and the need for comprehensive financial education. As champions of the "people helping people" philosophy, credit unions play a key role in supporting financial literacy and understanding among their members, staff, and communities.
Here are a few ways to recognize Financial Literacy Month in your credit union and community:
- Encourage your credit union's financial coaches to plan an initiative
- Offer financial literacy classes on specific topics: homeownership; savings; college planning
- Connect with local community organizations and promote financial literacy offerings
- Consider fundraising for local financial education programs in your community
- Support youth membership in developing healthy financial habits (CUNA resources)
Follow along with ICUF emails and social media (Facebook, LinkedIn) throughout April for more resources and to hear what ICUF is doing to support financial literacy throughout Iowa.
