CUNA Announces Anticipated Merger with NAFCU

The Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and the National Association of Federally-Insured Credit Unions (NAFCU), the nation’s two leading credit union associations, officially announced their intent to merge and form a new organization, America’s Credit Unions.

The Board of Directors and Executive Committees of both CUNA and NAFCU voted unanimously in May to merge the two organizations. The merger will be subject to approval from the members of CUNA and NAFCU during a 60-day voting period, which is planned to begin later this month.

When the transaction closes, Jim Nussle, President and CEO of CUNA, will serve as the President and CEO of the new association should the merger take effect.

Legal Tip: Converting a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy to a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy

If your member can no longer afford the Chapter 13 plan payments, the member may be able to convert to a Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Once converted, the member will be able to discharge unsecured debts and surrender or reaffirm secured debts. The credit union will receive the 341 meeting of creditors notice, and from there the Chapter 7 bankruptcy case continues as normal.
